Right, I'm not gonna waste my time or yours talking about this for long -
IMO they reached their "peak" on MHTRTC, then simply plastered (needlessly)
over the cracks on Geo, and the new stuff sounds like they've hired
somebody off of this list, who has a copy of Absynth under one arm and an
ounce of blow under the other, to do it all for 'em.
Not there's anything terribly "wrong" with the music, or that it's not a
rewarding listen for somebody, somewhere, but haven't the vast majority of
us heard it all before ?
Even the embarassingly Eurovisiony tracks off of that new Knife album are
more engaging a listen !
It's like gorging on too much candy - at first ye can't get enough of it,
until finally yer really, really sick of it. So then you start turning to
harder, more (un)savoury stuff.
Like Tod Dockstader's Aerial series, warped and (sometimes) terrifying late
night headphone listening. Or Akira Rabelais' Spellewaurneysherde (or
whatever it's called) ; music that has the contrary effect of not putting
you to sleep, but of keeping you awake - rivetted, transfixed, spellbound.
Something Boardsa haven't really done in a while I fear...
Granted, neither of the above releases has nary a "beat" between them, and
apologies if my post/argument is considered OT (I must confess that I
haven't even heard this new BoC EP yet), but hasn't this whole crafted
rhythmic electronic listening music with roots in hip hop 'n electro thing
been kinda done to death at this stage ? Even the administrators of this
here forum/listy thing have moved on twould appear ???

So how come no-one's been banging on about how cool'n'groovy /
boring-old-farty, enrapturing / snooze-inducing, fresh'n'wild /
same-old-same-old 'Trans Canada Highway' is?
Could this be a sign of an IDM cultural climate change, indicating that
IDM-peeps are no longer hanging on their every note or enigmatic squiggle
to impute strange significances?
I mean... what's the point of subscribing to this list if a guy can't get a
mailbox full of people inchoately slavering over/whining about the latest
emissions of their idols?

OK, you need someone to start the ball rolling, is that it? Right. 6
tracks: 1 you know, 'Dayvan Cowboy', as per the album (did you check that
video? Yeah, video of guys surfing. Cool. If you like surfing, that is. If
you don't. Not so cool. Last track is a remix by Odd Nosdam of the
aforementioned track - a 9 minute oddyssey (geddit?) that traipses
distractedly between some sort of smack-ambient noodle and hypno-drone-hop
semi-propulsion with gaps in between, like he got bored and went off to
make a cuppa and left the record button on (he did? aah.. *cool*). All very
um... *odd*... In between there are '4 new tracks' none of which sound that
new, but they're all OK. Bit like the album, really. You probably heard
'Skyliner' at bleep.com and it got you mildly aroused if not entirely
creamed.
Will that do to kick us off? OK, I know it's not Lester Bangs or Ian Penman
or Kodwo Eshun, but hey... you got no excuse now. And don't give me that
coy sh|t about release dates. You've got an internet connection haven't
you... don't pretend you haven't already downloaded the whole thing P2P and
proudly burnt it for all your mates. Yes, you there...
