Universally reviled? Really? I thought the album was genius - all of it, even the prepared piano bits that had the IDM purists gagging (I recall one list member back when the album was released condemning the "general midi piano" pieces). I would have a hard time translating copies of Analord 10 going for close to $300 on eBay as "near apathy". In defense of RDJ, no matter what he puts out now he can't please everybody, nor do I expect everything he does to be as groundbreaking as "I Care...". I do recall quite clearly that the Richard D James record was slagged in many corners when it was released as well. Funny how memory gets selective when one has a point to make. When it comes to IDM, it seems like either the inhabitants on this list are out of touch or else many sites which whiip out "reviews" that feature quotes like the one above are. I'll put my money on the latter being out of sync, for what that's worth. Seems like part and parcel of IDM is indifference to what is thought by 'outsiders' anyway. Elitism is the stuff of most niche-based music nerds in one way or another. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hi my name is richard d. james and you can thank me for creating this entire genre whenever you want, as soon as you get done bitching about the fact that i don't sell enough collector edition 5 CD tins with keychains and decorative whistles. I think the guy gets it right... Aphex just is taking so long between releases, and the music is not as mind-blowing as it was. I mean, the guy is obviously a genius when it comes to music. Is it that he doesn't have it like he did, or does he just not want to do it, or what? I don't expect every track to be an "On" or "4", but the quality just hasn't been there. I guess if you're going to be prolific, be more prolific and we'll brook a lapse in quality for the occasionl quality tracks you find sprinkled in the Analords. Otherwise, if you're going to take 2 or 3 years, I want another album on the level of _I Care_, _Richard D_, or the Select Ambient Works. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the occasionl quality tracks you find sprinkled in the Analords. Otherwise, if you're going to take 2 or 3 years, I want another album on the level of _I Care_, _Richard D_, or the Select Ambient Works. i agree, but my point was that i think people have at least been interested in the analord series, especially here. i suppose i'm also one of the exceptions in that i found 'drukqs' to be pretty brilliant. not great all the way through, but one of those great "sprawling mess" double albums (like prince's "sign o' the times") that you kind of wish had been pared down to one CD, and yet the mess seems to be part of the point. but yes, i think james should get over himself, stop this "i will never release my best work" attitude and put out another complete classic. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I really got into Drukqs only a few months ago, when I grabbed the mp3s (and Analord) off of bittorrent to listen to at work. I put drukqs and analord on shuffle play and went back to figuring out how to read DICOM image files, and after a few shuffles through I decided it was way better than listening to the CD had been when it came out. I liked the Analord tracks because they remind me a lot of the stuff he was doing early on, without being the same thing over again. Drukqs also comes into a new focus if you listen to the arrangements on the Alarm Will Sound Acoustica CD. Some of the Alarm Will Sound renditions are of the talking dog variety -- a talking dog is amazing, even if he doesn't talk very well -- but it made me listen to the Drukqs tracks again the way the arrangers did -- hearing all the bits in the RDJ arrangements that slid by unnoticed before. I don't think anyone should get by with weak tracks just because they're famous, but Aphex Twin is a sneaky bastard, and you can miss some of his best stuff if you aren't listening closely.
