What is a good (free) MP3 tagging app? I've been using MP3 Tagger - but today I encoded bought CD's using EAC & LAME and then tried to tag them using MP3 tagger, and I'm getting an error code that says "Type Mismatch". What does this mean and how do I get around it? I can manually enter the info on each individual track in WinAmp, but obviously that's laborious. Oh - I've got v 1.60 of MPTagger... this might be out of date! I use MusicBrainz, which is a GPL tagging package. It makes a fingerprint of your mp3s and will access a community run database to determine the track name. It will then sort it for you by Artist->Album->Track # - Track Name , or however you want it to sort. It will fill out all the ID3 tag information w/ appropriate information, even w/ the genre. This is great if all your mp3s are 128kbps or higher, as lower bitrates tend to give false positives and can lead to misidentified tracks. It will provide a percentage of accuracy in the match, so when the percentage match is less than 75% (or any amount you pick) it will request that you identify the track manually. There is a beta Linux client available too, but I can't remember the name of it at this moment. The linux iTunes clone amaroK has built in support for MusicBrainz tagged tracks and will show the MusicBrainz icon to show the track was tagged by MusicBrainz. I used to use Tag & Rename, as it used CDDB and All Music Guide to get it's results. The AMG method seems to have broken down over time (used a screen scrape to get the info after you browsed for the album on their site thru the program), but the CDDB integration is pretty damn good. I have no idea - it's probably an application specific error message, and I've never used that program.

I use musicbrainz. It checks the correctness of tags against a database, which I've had to add a good amount to (anyone can add info to the database, and then its voted on). Once the tags are verified you can have the program sort the files into folders set up to your liking and rename the files so everything's uniform. I have mine sorted into \artist name\album title [year]\track. title \va\album title [year]\artist name - track - title There's a separate setting for various artist albums. It's a huge help, but you have to be careful about doing a huge batch at once since it can make mistakes. I read on their site that their database entries are going to be more thorough. musicbrainz.org ak

Sorry for the late reply on this. I actually use a combination of a few different programs for MP3 tagging: MP3 Tag Studio 3.5 http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/ MP3tag (already mentioned) http://www.mp3tag.de/ File Renamer Basic http://sherrodcomputers.com/products_filerenamer_download.cfm MP3 Tag Studio is great if your file names are already mostly complete and correct. It will extract the data (artist, track name, track number, album name) from the file name and put it into the ID3 tags. And it doesn't matter what format the file names are in as long as they're consistent across an entire album. It can also do lots of other advanced data manipulation of ID3 tags and file names. If the file names are just slightly off, then I'll use File Renamer Basic to fix the file names and then run MP3 Tag Studio. And meanwhile, I use MP3tag to view my progress and see which ID3 tags are finished and which still need fixing. It's much easier to get an overview of your progress with this program than with MP3 Tag Studio. I also tried MusicBrainz, but had some issues with it. Maybe I need to mess with it again.
