There are so many things that could be said. Well, Tom has gotten really good at hurting my ears as time goes on. I can envision entire beats made out of the most cochlear-damaging frequencies known to man on future albums. There are also moments of pastoral genius on it. The main thought I had was how much it compared to "Drukqs." Here is my thesis: Any kid with Kazaa or Soulseek, a laptop, and a password crack can download exceptionally powerful software such as Cubase, Reason, Acid, etc. In a few mouseclicks, they can do what it took other guys in the late 80's and the 90's loads of gear and time to make. Old heavyweights and innovators like autechre, aphex twin, and squarepusher have reacted. Tom and Richard flex their musical chops on prepared pianos and bass guitars as if to say "my experimental flair and genius is not just with knobs." Autechre flies so far left field with complexity that it takes years to digest it. All of this to keep the product differentiated and inimitable... Believe me, I love the innovation but "Ultravisitor" like "Draft 7.30" is giving me future shock. On the one hand, the shock and awe is great like when I first heard "73-Yips" or anything off of Tri-Repetae. But on the other hand, the ante has been raised so high with speed, complexity, and frequency ranges that it feels like switching from your mom's Taurus to a Dragster without the parachute. However you feel about this album, it definitely needs discussion... Counts __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I've not listened to it too often. What I already see is, Steinbolt is completest insanity. If you feel like you want to destroy the whole world, Steinbolt would make a good background track. Hope we all don't switch to heavy metal though.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

That's probably why so much so-called IDM coming out these days sux0r5 -- the premium placed on "different" and "complex" is so high that the aesthetic of "flow" is getting lost. While it's true that any knucklehead can download appZ n' crackZ off the interweb at will, that doesn't give said knucklehead any talent. A very wise man running a label told me recently: "Everyone is so obsessed with being different. Fuck that -- it doesn't have to be different, it just has to be GOOD." Maybe your future shock just means it sucks, despite it's complexity. w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

*wince* I've tried to avoid that thought but your blunt statement is getting harder to reject. But, the more that I listen to Ultravisitor, the more I "get it" and enjoy it so I'm not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. Even though I'm only 25, I keep saying 'it ain't what it used to be' in my head. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I dunno... I think Ultravisitor is pretty darn good. I'm not worried so much about the complexity of it or whatever. I mean, listen to Tetra Sync, or Iambic 9 Poetry, or Ultravisitor... I don't think those track are overly complex. They just sound good. What's even more amazing is that this album is 80 minutes long, but it's not 40 minutes of filler. I don't even think there's ten minutes of filler here. The only track that doesn't really do as much for me is that one where he's talking the whole time. Sorry to gush. I'm just really impressed with this album. Quoting John Counts <polycyclicism@yahoo.com>:

50 cycles? I love it, esp. the last quarter of it. BTW, about complexity: Remember the first stuff (testone etc) of Sweet Exorcist on Warp. Really easy, just a few instruments, great if you compose on a sllllooooowwwww PC, the opposite of complexity but it was good in a way. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Very very dated sounding now and I can't bear listening to it without wincing :-) I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hello! I'm looking for a 12". It's called "Enter the Tekken" and was released by "F-Off Productions" (I think). Anybody have a copy that they'd be willing to sell? Thanks, skkatter ===== http://www.skkatter.net __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
