The Prisoner: OK - this could possibly be a terribly aged subject - but ripe for IDM use/abuse - who has offered up some IDM related/based on The Prisoner? If you don't know - The Prisoner is probably one of THE wierdest, most subversive television ever televised ... many of you have possibly caught it on PBS/BBC and wrote it off as something less than significant ... but it still holds up, especially for Americans during this time and age ... Please send out recommendations/samplings of The Prisoner, and your thoughts ... I'd love to hear them ... Be seeing you ... NP: Outkast "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" (yes I believe this album at least slightly overlaps IDM) ... if you have an opinion which is your favorite? Now we're talking. The Prisoner has to be my favourite TV show of all time, the weirdness, the anger, the paranoia, the look, the feel, the Brave-New-World-ness, the relevance to today, rover, Portmerion. I agree that it subversive, There's a whole page devoted to Prisoner inspired music (which includes Iron Maiden believe it or not) but it's not complete, it doesn't mention even The Prisoners for example. I can't think of any direct IDM Prisoner stuff, the page does mention a group called Dream Into Dust who released a Prisoner tribute a few years back. It was stupidly limited so i don't have a copy but from what I can make out it they appear to be dark ambient or something along the lines. There's probably been loads of cheesy dance tracks throughout the years which sample The Prisoner, especially the intro speech but I think I could live without hearing them. http://www.the-prisoner-6.freeserve.co.uk/arch_4_1.htm

how interesting you should bring this up. when i saw the topic, i wasn't sure if i was going to mention it. we do have copies left of the 7"/cassette 'a prison for oneself'. you're correct in that it's not IDM at all. the music is all samples made from instruments which were around at the time of the show (also the reason for its release on vinyl and cassette). one piece is an experimental noisescape based on musique-concrete-type sounds that are similar to when the main character was being drugged, hypnotized, or treated with machinery. i was honored to have the release written about in the official prisoner fan magazine at the time of its release in fall 1997 (on the 30th anniversary of the show's first airing). we had a release party at CBGB gallery, where some of us were dressed as if we were in the show, we played episodes on a large screen TV, and the place was scattered with white balloons mimicking "rover". unfortunately, its limited release and appeal meant few promo copies and little coverage, but it did accomplish introducing the show to some of the underground dark music crowd, and that kind of music to a few prisoner fans. if anyone is interested in more details about this release or other prisoner links, see http://www.chthonicstreams.com/prisoner.html if there are enough inquiries, i can put up some streaming mp3 clips on the page this weekend. derek rush [dream into dust] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

WOW - I was completely blown away by how many responses this thread has recieved ... I finally reached the end of the series, "Fall Out" for the second time (the first time being years ago during a different time in my life) and I have to just rant that this is one of the most absurd, most profoundly postmodern series ever conceived ... although at first glance you might think it is dopey, those who delve deeper have got to admit that Patrick MacGoohan was onto something very, very forward-thinking, next-level shit!!! Thanks for making this a fun thread ... and ... be seeing you ... PS if you're a California resident, vote against Arnold Schwarzenegger for the New Number Two. dave On Friday, Sep 26, 2003, at 06:30 US/Pacific, chthonic streams wrote:

ooh, the prisoner - all time top favourite tv show from the 60's and i've even been to portmarion in wales where they filmed it a truly surreal holiday snapshot experience. yes... any idm related prisoner music on vinyl and all the soundbytes are brilliant sampling material.. patrick magoohan... & btw as the most old skool person lurking on the list, back in the day, this was shown simultaneously in the mid-60's when it first came out in the States and I believe it was actually on one of the networks because I do recall commercial breaks... This was in the days before everyone had 999 TV channels and there were only 3 TV networks...ABC, NBC, CBS and that educational TV called PBS...and the internet was still in someones imagination as a dream. nH At 12:53 am -0500 26/9/03, dave_dunstan wrote:

Had an absolutly magical day in Portmerion myself. I had a .. erm ... special yoghurt before hand and got a steam train (!) though the mountains which stopped right next to Portmerion. Spent a good part of the day just wondering around the village and the woods, completly surreal place, made even weirder by mental images of Rover appearing. The only downside is that the photo company lost all our holiday photos so I only have my own cloudly memory to remember the place by.

Theres a great website about the town and its history at: http://www.portmeirion.wales.com/en/index.php "Clough Williams-Ellis opened Portmeirion in 1926 to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it." good pics and all, i think it would be quite a cool little holiday. -thor |--- Highpoint Lowlife records -----------------\ | Si-cut.db + Fisk Industries - coming Nov 3rd \ | http://www.highpointlowlife.com -----------------\ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

"Answers are a prison for oneself." It was shown in the US in the summer of '68, on CBS. Not all 17 episodes: only 16 of them were aired in the US originally: 'Living In Harmony', the wild west episode, was not shown at the time, evidently due to the use of drugs by the characters in that episode. IIRC, CBS showed the entire series again a year later, and they aired the lsd episode the second go-round. "I've resigned." Recently, Silva America released a 3 Volume set of CDs of original music from the series, much of it unavailable on other recordings. Nice graphic design on the cd series, a 35th anniversary affair. "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, briefed, de-briefed or numbered." Supposedly, Patrick McGoohan, the mastermind of the entire series, dreamt the famous opening theme music, woke up and translated it Ron Grainer, who is credited as the composer. "My life is my own." Favourite episode: 'Many Happy Returns': it's No.6's birthday: he gets a cake. ;) http://tinyurl.com/oqw3 seek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Wow, this is bizarre! I just bought the prisoner dvd box set yesterday! I hadn't even heard of it a month ago, it was only after watching the extras on the Robert Anton Wilson documentary “Maybe Logic” where they discuss the prisoner that I thought that sounds good, I’ll go out and buy it, then I spotted volume 1 in my local library, rented it, loved it, ordered it, it arrives yesterday and now its being discussed! Talk about synchronicity! I feel inspired to sample it now! Mark SIZE does matter - The UK's biggest *Free* Web based mail - 10 MB Free mail.lycos.co.uk
