sorry for the OT nature of the post, but i thought someone out there would be in the know... im considering buying an mp3 player that i would be able to hook up to my stereo (through rca jacks) and also to my car stereo (it has a line in headphone type jack). thats probably easy. but im wondering what model is the best to get right now. ive heard of the nomad and of course the ipod, but i dont know how they might compare or if theres a better model out there... i want portability but lots of storage (i want to convert my entire cdr collection [tons!] to mp3 files before they rot). i of course would love cool editing/cataloging/programing features. And a big plus would be the ability to use the unit as a quality digital recorder (built in mic or mic input). does such a beast exist? anyone have suggestions/advice? -Thad ===== Thad Biggerstaff ~ReSource~ daht73@yahoo.com "Not to forget, I 'museumize' myself; so that then I pay myself a visit and find me again in all the relics, to hand down memories from one to the other, like a genealogical tree, as if it were morning!" - Massimo Toniutti __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Went through a similar thing awhile back. You may want to consider a mini-disc player - I know it's not as tech but it's got unlimited capacity (via more discs), and long battery life - smaller than a deck of cards. LP modes (on the sony at least) can cram quite a bit of high-quality sound onto one disc (more than enough braindance to rot your noodle in one sitting). USB interface allows for nice retrieval/storage from your computer though it's no-virtual hard-drive. If you have a PC you should be ripping oggs to your firewire drive by now for archivals... You mentioned quality-recording however and I wasn't too happy with the options for sound quality on the mp3 units compared to a mic and the MD. Haven't regreted it yet. decisions, decisions, --pink --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

my recommendation is a portable CD player that supports MP3 playing. that way you dont have convert your mp3s (which destroys some more of the little quality left anyway) AND you can burn your mp3s to a normal CDR (much cheaper than a MD) which you can use on your computer and the player. I have a Panasonic SL-MP50 and its doing a fine job. Its over a year old now so there are probably better players available now. .ca -- +++ GMX - die erste Adresse für Mail, Message, More! +++ Getestet von Stiftung Warentest: GMX FreeMail (GUT), GMX ProMail (GUT) (Heft 9/03 - 23 e-mail-Tarife: 6 gut, 12 befriedigend, 5 ausreichend) Jetzt selbst kostenlos testen: http://www.gmx.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I know mp3's are of lower quality than cd audio due to compression, but why does converting mp3's back into cd format destroy even more quality? What exactly are you losing? More of the dynamic range? And would it make a difference, say, if you converted mp3s into wav's first, like in Sound Forge, versus letting a burning program like Nero do the conversions for you? I just had never thought about this before. But I suppose it could be similar to digital photography and the more you re-save a file in different formats the more quality you lose (which primarily has to do with each file types compression algorithm, I believe). -----Original Message----- From: cerebral.ap0plexy@gmx.net [mailto:cerebral.ap0plexy@gmx.net] Sent: September 16, 2003 1:32 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] OT: MP3 player-suggestions? .....my recommendation is a portable CD player that supports MP3 playing. that way you dont have convert your mp3s (which destroys some more of the little quality left anyway)..... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

converting mp3s back to audio CD forrmat (16bit PCM stereo) will not destroy more quality. however, MiniDisks are not audio CDs, they use a compression similar to MP3. converting between these formats looses some more quality because the encoded files can not be transcoded (AFAIK) but have to decoded and re-encoded. (even if transcoding is possible some quality will most likely be lost in the process). about converting MP3s back to 'CD' format: if the decoder used is of recent release date (lets say in the last two years) you should be on save side. AFAIK Nero uses the Fraunhofer decoder as does SoundForge. your comparison to digital imaging is correct, mp3 compression can very roughly be compared to the JPG compression: the sampled information is converted into another domain (frequency domain for MP3, cosine domain (if that the right word) for JPG) then the information is reduced (quantized, this is where the quality is lost) and entropy encoded/compressed (something like ZIP or RAR, no information is lost here). the way the information is reduced (quantized) decides about the loss of quality and for which purpose the format is suitable. I hope that was not too boring :)
