Went through a similar thing awhile back. You may want to consider a
mini-disc player - I know it's not as tech but it's got unlimited
capacity (via more discs), and long battery life - smaller than a deck
of cards. LP modes (on the sony at least) can cram quite a bit of
high-quality sound onto one disc (more than enough braindance to rot
your noodle in one sitting). USB interface allows for nice
retrieval/storage from your computer though it's no-virtual hard-drive.
If you have a PC you should be ripping oggs to your firewire drive by
now for archivals...
You mentioned quality-recording however and I wasn't too happy with the
options for sound quality on the mp3 units compared to a mic and the
MD. Haven't regreted it yet.
