If you want the best quality ripper and encoder... thats easy. Exact Audio Copy (in secure mode) and LAME 3.93 vbr, using one of the alt preset commands. I prefer " --alt-preset extreme". You can get EAC here: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de (and its free). EAC is easily the best ripper out there (except possibly PlexTools, but thats limited), and will ensure a 100% error free perfect rip if used correctly. And LAME is by far the most developed encoder/decoder out there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thad Biggerstaff" <daht73@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, September 05, 2003 12:53 AM Subject: [idm] OT: mp3 encoder/ripper suggestions?

Hydrogenaudio ran some encoder tests... Quicktime i believe came out on top for quality, tho nero6 just launched with VBR, gapless and HE AAC which is to AAC what mp3pro is to mp3.. it lets you get impressive quality at rates as low as 30k/s.. i've tested it on some electronica and it beat ogg at same rates, tho ogg is still good it changes the sound a lot.. ogg is the only choice for streaming though at the moment

Thumbs down on CDex ... I downloaded the most recent one earlier this week, and although it is fast I am finding a HUGE skip in about one track per CD. And it doesn't pick a sucky track to skip on, it skips on one of the really good ones ... weak! dave On Sat, 6 Sep 2003, James R Bamford wrote:

the non-"Complex" AAC algorythm used in Quicktime Lite just plain lacks. I've only compared it to AAChoo, but its quality at 96kbps vs QT is certainly noticable. So, any suggestions for a good comand-line AAC encoder supporting the "Complex" algor that i can drop in as a backend for EAC ? there's not much out there it seems. MPEG4IP doesn't do windows. -=dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "James R Bamford" <jim@jimtreats.com> To: "SE/30" <grindingbassline@hotmail.com>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, September 05, 2003 5:14 PM Subject: RE: [idm] OT: AAC encoder suggestions?
