I am concerned for nightclubs. Richmond, whose conservative city fathers already hate nightclubs, had its daily paper run an editorial cartoon with Death waiting to pay a cover to get into a nightclub. Combine these latest tragedies with some of the already draconian, anti-youth laws going into effect and it does not take a genius to see that this industry is under the gun. Its too bad. Its a real shame, because with file-sharing and the major corporate labels losing tons of money (and not being able to pay all their lawyers), independent live music was poised to take on more stature up to this point. Now everybody is going to have to pay for more security guards and sprinkler systems. This is a great time to get involved and stand up in support of these small businesses. Go out this weekend and spend a few bucks at your favorite local muisc dive. Damn Great White. Excellent point: thank you for raising it. You don't see editorials pushing to close all toy stores because the roof of a Toys R Us collapsed in a snowstorm and trapped some people inside. It is a damn shame that nightclubs are being villified. How many people died in amusement parks over the last year? At least in San Francisco, all the venus already have to have fire sprinklers (as does just about every commercial space).

you also dont see a toys-r-us filled at 3 times their legal capacity. if you did, im sure they'd be going after them as well.

i'll bet it was less than the number of people trampled trying to escape an overcrowded nightclub for one reason or another.

they also require licenses for pyrotechnics, just like.. well.. everyone else. if everyone would actually follow the rules, all would be well. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

My goodness, did you just say that sprinkler systems are stupid? These clubs should be equipped with this sort of crap already. Few other businesses are able to get away with it, so why should nightclubs be excepted? All modern movie theaters, even retrofitted ones, have clearly marked, easy to access exits in case something happens, and a good sprinkler system to protect from fires. And the row system implemented in theaters is MUCH worse in panic situations than a rather open nightclub. If any other public facility was operating in the manner that this nightclub was, they'd be shut down or fined heavily. The nightclub chose to disregard the rules, and now people are dead. Sounds like the owners have the problem, not the government. ------- eggytoast.com ------- coming soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
