okay, i'm sure you've heard this one before.... i've read the list for a while, even posted a few times, but today i approach with a serious question: how do i get started making idm?????? i've got a lot of ideas and no money, i've tried fruityloops but it seems to limiting, i mean i've made a few little crappy songs but it seems like every time i get an idea for something, i spend three hours trying to get the right sound for the first note (with whatever combination of freeware i'm playing with at the time), until i get too frustrated and just listen to venetian snares instead/ any thoughts??? thanks, -andrew

maybe this is the problem. don't try to get anything "right". experiment with techniques, wrap your head around the basics, and do lots of exercises with sound. it is the rare artist indeed who wakes up, decides to start making music, and later the same day puts out an uber-collectible 12". also, you might have to invest some money at some point. you don't have to run out and buy a nord modular, but buying an audiophile 24/96 to replace your on-board AC97 audio (for example) will reap big results. cheers w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Pretty much any program will work fine as long as you stick with it and are creative. For instance, fruity loops may seem limiting to you, but proem uses it for all of his tracks. impulse tracker is an old dos program that is sample based only, but esem and lackluster have written many tracks with it. And rumor has it that venetian snares uses a tracker-like program called octamed for his tracks. I even heard of one guy who programed a tracker for a couple atari 2600s and used those. It's really up to your creativity, not the inherenent limitations of any one piece of software. --- Frosted Flake <frostedflake@softhome.net> wrote:

A good place to start is with Reason. It?s very easy to learn, but has great depth. Don?t get to caught up in finding the right sound. Try starting out with as simple a sound as possible and then build. Try focusing on the architecture of your music rather than the building blocks. Whatever technique you use make sure your having fun doing it. -charles www.mp3.com/groundchuckles __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful.
