Pretty much any program will work fine as long as you
stick with it and are creative. For instance, fruity
loops may seem limiting to you, but proem uses it for
all of his tracks. impulse tracker is an old dos
program that is sample based only, but esem and
lackluster have written many tracks with it. And
rumor has it that venetian snares uses a tracker-like
program called octamed for his tracks. I even heard
of one guy who programed a tracker for a couple atari
2600s and used those. It's really up to your
creativity, not the inherenent limitations of any one
piece of software.
