i'd quite like to see replies on list as well. This is something i try not to think about, but has been a nagging worry at the back of my mind, as i'm sure i heard something about that years back when the cd was first introduced. Its scary to think about the amount of money you've invested in music, if it wasn't going to last long enough to scare your grandkids with. -t On Tue, 28 Jan 2003, Peter Becker wrote:

I'm not sure if it counts as disc rot, but I have a double CD album (The Orb - Live 93) that slowly became unplayable despite being kept well, in their original jewel case. What happened with these CDs is that the dye label (which covered the whole of the label side) started flaking off, taking the reflective aluminium layer underneath with it. Eventually I ended up with just a couple of clear discs of polycarbonate, all the data still on them, but completely unreadable by anything. As an experiment I sprayed the label side with silver paint and tried to rip the audio with cdparanoia (if you were using Windows I expect EAC would work)... and it worked! There were a heap of minor read errors but nothing that cdparanoia couldn't fix. It sounded dreadful when playing in my CD player, but the data was off it, so I binned it and burned it to CDR. Which is great, at least for the next 10 years or so until significant amounts of the recording dye migrate back to their original state, when I'll have to salvage the audio all over again. -- marm --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm under the impression that disc rot has only occurred on CDs manufactured by PDO in th 80's and early 90's due to a manufacturing error, i.e. it's not something that we generally have to worry about. However, entropy is a whole 'nother issue. -marco

I have some CD-rs that have disc rot. Old Maxell discs (well, old being from '99-'00 or so. Not very old). The edges are changing color and the foil-stuff is fading away from the edges. The most notable one is a copy of Windows 98, so the content may have something to do with it :) Anyway, it gave me a good reason to hate cheap maxell Cd-rs, which isn't that hard to do but now I can justify it. So it's not just PDO CD's, but some crappy CD-r's, too. Luckily they still read, but the data on the edge is lost. derek -- eggytoast.com -------------- commerce soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yes, that's what I heard. I have some discs by PDO from that era, that visually appear to be deteriorating. Though they do seem to play OK. Maybe the error rate is not bad enough to cause noticeable problems. I remember hearing that the bleach used in some cardboard sleeves can sometimes cause deterioration in the lacquer on the label side. clic --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

so, on that salon story.. an ex girlfriend of mine moved to washington a while ago, where aparently, lots and lots and lots of different mushrooms grow. some of them dont grow anywhere else in the world. she kept going on and on about the healing properties in some of them, and how they were beneficial to the world. cures for diseases, ways to fix polluted soil, etc.. then she tells me that psilocybian mushrooms are really, really, really common out there. so, that makes me wonder.. how do you decide if a mushroom will fix polluted soil? eat one, then start staring at another from the same batch? i wanna spit fireballs.. :-(

In Texas, lotsa people are into (if into drugs) going out and looking for the mushrooms on cowshit in pastures. Reason being they're likely to be the right kind of shrooms.
