Disc rot (from what I gather) is a mfg. defect in CD pressing wherein the
CD becomes "bronzed" at the edges and produces static-like noise when
played. It's apparently cause by aluminum oxidation in the media and can't
be rectified - only replaced.
It's more common in laser discs but has happened in CDs as well.
