Bad news- I work at Premiere Radio (Clear Channel owns both us and XM) and was trying to use my connections most of all last year to get an idm type show on one of their electronic stations. I wouldn't take no for an answer- sent them about a dozen demo shows to everybody in Progamming. They were having none of it. They told me to stop sending them. I don't know anything of the current programming except that Dj Rap does a drum n bass show somewhere on XM. I wonder - does anyone on the list know of XM Radio stations. I'm an intern at the XM office in NYC (hq is in dc). Most of the work i do involves the live channel and while we have some interesting content ( a bunch of old BBC live recordings never broadcast in the us & a few exclusive XM live performances including a live clean version of Cock Mobster by MC Paul Barman) we have a kind of pathetic pool of music to draw from. As far as what other channels play: I can really only tell by what's in the archives. There's barely any idm (some aphex twin, squarepusher, a little autechre and proem and practically nothing else). There's a pretty good collection of rock: including marc bolan and t rex, zz top, amon duul, iggy pop, XTC etc. but i doubt they get put in that order or even played on the same channel. There are a bunch of world music channels. A lot of jazz channels though I doubt there being even one devoted solely to avant jazz. so if your looking for a source of great new music look elsewhere. if you want some thing that's about 10 steps up from commercial radio xm would be cool for you -peter

Yeah, most of the lines where he didn't actually use a taboo word were left alone but he did a damn good job rewriting the chorus and the lines with dirty words. you know, it's somewhat shortsighted on the satellites part to ignore genres like IDM. obviously they spent tons on equipment, etc. so they have to ramp up subscribers en masse, but the fact is, having something like an IDM channel would probably ensure that people would stay subscribed. i have no interest in xm or sirius if they just have one or two mainstream electronic shows, but i'd definitely consider it if i knew that i could always turn on idm and real indie rock channels. my 2 cents. sean groovesmag.com __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hey, I dont know much about XM but there is a really good internet radio station (same thing?) being broadcast from Edinburgh Scotland. They get all the local underground talent to play - up and coming youngsters and established djs. Its mostly Techno, Drum and Base & weird electronica and at the moment it only broadcasts at the weekends. It has a pirate type feel to it - well worth checking out :-) http://dilatedradio.com/ Riaz_la

XM is satellite, I believe? Similar to how you can get most of the stations on the normal telly broadcast using just an antenna, but need somethign else for satellite TV (and a subscriber's fee). It will be very interesting, though, if cellular technology gets to the point where you can stream music. Not only can anyone with an internet connection basically be a radio, but it would likely severely hamper traditional radio. Now *that* would piss of RIAA. XM is two satellites, named "Rock" and "Roll". While they transmit an RF signal, is it not comparable to landbased radio( or television) tower transmissions. It is a digitized signal, which requires a decoder in addition to a receiver. In addition, with satellite radio, if there is any problem with the signal, or you drive into a tunnel, you get no reception, where as with traditional radio, you get a lower quality signal, i.e. static or crossover of other nearby strong signals, or multipath(from nearby hills or big buildings)

That's basically what satellite radio is. I believe the other provide is named Cerius??? They're basically on the east side of the US, and Non- GM cars. I used to work at Boeing Satellite Systems which manufactured and launched them, and is owned by GM, so I never bothered to get too familiar them the other guys. However, from what I understand, there is a significant difference in the digital signal processing technology in the other birds, for those who might be interested in that sort of thing. But if you want it on a cell phone, that would add a few pounds to the weight of the cell phone. Once the satellite radio market gets established, then the receiver/decoder hardware might be reduced in size and incorporated into other devices. But there's other issues with adding satellite radio to a cell phone, like speakers and power issues.

It's not _quite_ that simple. To stream, you need to purchase real media steams, which are quite expensive. You basically gotta have a pipe instead of a straw, which is how even a dsl connection would compare.
