I'm an intern at the XM office in NYC (hq is in dc). Most of the work i do
involves the live channel and while we have some interesting content ( a
bunch of old BBC live recordings never broadcast in the us & a few
exclusive XM live performances including a live clean version of Cock
Mobster by MC Paul Barman) we have a kind of pathetic pool of music to draw
from.
As far as what other channels play: I can really only tell by what's in the
archives. There's barely any idm (some aphex twin, squarepusher, a little
autechre and proem and practically nothing else). There's a pretty good
collection of rock: including marc bolan and t rex, zz top, amon duul, iggy
pop, XTC etc. but i doubt they get put in that order or even played on the
same channel. There are a bunch of world music channels. A lot of jazz
channels though I doubt there being even one devoted solely to avant jazz.
so if your looking for a source of great new music look elsewhere. if you
want some thing that's about 10 steps up from commercial radio xm would be
cool for you
