Who else was at the post NAMM party last night? Any comments? It was fun for me to finally hear the Nortec crew live, they rocked the house with their clunky norteno techno beats [and I mean clunky in a positive sense!]. They seem to have a real sense of fun about what they're doing, that was really refreshing in a music scene that can be a bit on the serious side at times if ya know what I mean... Respect to the E.L.M. crew for another cool event! I was there - til the middle of Nortec's set.... I'm no expert... but what the fuck was IDM about that? sounded like house to me. am I wrong? is my hearing not differentiating beyond that fourfourfourfour ad infinitum? I haven't been to NAMM since 1995, left Beachwood Canyon in 1999 to return to the smoggy San Gab Val, so I've seen precious few industry types since... when's the next Nesh??? i guess i thought there was a kind of 'IDM' quality to the overall sound of it all...probably because they were timestretching everything in Ableton Live [i'm guessing!], everything sounded a bit digitally hazy to me...also the beats were not really house, all those sampled cutup swingin snare drums and horns are strickly inna breakbeat norteno stylee as far as what i been told... seriously, though, who cares what it's called? i thought nortec were cool, funky fresh and with a sense of humor about it all it seemed from the attitude i heard in their set. what did anybody else think of them? it was the first time i've heard any of them live -- and BTW -- anybody know which ones of the collective were there playing last night? they were also running some fun deconstructed mexican cowboy images on the walls during their set... john -- John von Seggern producer - DJ - researcher Digital Cutup Lounge [Hong Kong/Los Angeles] email <johnvon at digitalcutuplounge dot com> bio <http://www.digitalcutuplounge.com/newsite/jvsremix.htm> home <http://www.digitalcutuplounge.com> school <http://ethnomus.ucr.edu/jvs/bio.html> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I thought they were cheesy in-your-face-chicano, and I didn't find anything new at all. I much prefer something along the lines of Cafe Tecuba from Mexico City, who combine many musical styles, and also serve to communicate the plight of the various native tribes in Mexico. Definitely not IDM, and probably not at all electronic, but a fresh take on chicano. Are you familiar with them? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Speaking of not idm, but still amazing, has everyone heard the new hallucinogen remix project? The album is called 'in dub', and it contains 6 dub-esque remixes of various hallucinogen tracks. The production is absolutely mind blowing, I've listened to it about 20 times so far and am still hearing all kinds of details on each successive listen. Highly recommended! cafe tacuva are excellent. I also think most of the material by nortec collectiv is excellent. There material is cheeky and refreshing using banda and cumbia influenced ryhthms. i would not really compare tacuva and nortec. apples and oranges. "in your face chicano" interesting statement.
