I'm going into Chicago tomorrow with my kids, and we're all going to the Fireside Bowl for Cex and Stars As Eyes. You should too! If you see the 40-something tall guy with a 4-guard buzz cut, mustache and glasses hanging with 3 teenage boys, that would be me. Come say hi! Well capsule review time: Stars As Eyes: I saw them about a year ago and their set is a lot more dynamic and interactive. Didn't pick up their new CD but the new material sounded great, esp. the song with vocals. Marred a bit (as the whole show was) by a sound man who didn't know what to make of them. It got painfully loud and the bass turned muddy on some of the songs. Numbers: They rocked. They are doing a sort of New Wave Revival thing -- think B-52s, Talking Heads, filtered through sort of a White Stripes aesthetic. Which doesn't really do them justice as a live act -- for a bass, drums, and keyboard band they are very tight and put their songs across. I especially liked the keyboard player using the same rude, nasal patch on a Moog Source for every song. Music to pogo to for the new milleneum. Magus: The local guy, who apparently had fans there -- he had a setup with an MC505, an 808 (I think) and some sort of keyboard, and he sort of sang, through heavy effects. It was pretty banging stuff, very simplistic -- reminded me a bit of Suicide. His stage presence was very odd -- black plastic nerd-chic glasses, long hair cut blunt at the shoulders, in a Jean Jacket with no shirt. He sort of danced through the non-singing bits, but not on beat, and some of his vocals sounded out of sync with the music. He got a big reaction, which baffled me since it seemed a bit slapdash and dorky. Of course I'm from Iowa. Slapdash and dorky could be the next big thing in Chicago. Cex: Full disclosure -- I have personal and professional ties with Rjyan, so I'm biased, but he's really turning into a consumate entertainer. He's charming and funny, and gets into his tracks in a very whole-body, dramatic way. I work with hip hop guys all the time, and see a lot of hip hop shows and he's got them all beat for stage presence and rapport with a crowd. His new tracks are fantastic -- more singing, more melody, more goofy, clever lyrics. And his beats are really, really good. If he ever tires of leaping around with his pants falling down, he could be the next Neptunes. Apparently he's an acquired taste, yet to be acquired by some folks on IDM. Whatever. Stay at home and put Confield on infinite repeat. But if you want to have fun at a show, go see him. I've seen him 3 times now, and every time he gets better. He has the best chance of anyone in 'our' scene of crossing over, straight up. Or as my son Lucas put it "he's like Eminem, but not so offensive and annoying." Instead of homophobic and misogynistic rants, you get well written, funny, substantive rhymes about bikes, dodgeball, fingering, and middle school. Like he says, he could rap in a vacuum and still go platinum. On Fri, 29 Nov 2002, Kewu wrote:

I would like to add to Kent's review that I think Numbers seriously ROCK. They're really great live, and although you could compare them to all kinds of folks I would say they definitely have their own power source!! The second Numbers show I saw: I told a few always-skeptical friends that of all the bands that night, that Numbers would put on probably the loudest, craziest set out of everyone that night, and that they were really really fun. They were all, "Yeah, that's cool, alright lets stay for them ... Should be good ... hum" Then I said, "OK maybe not, they are not going to be that good, I was just high or something the first night I saw them, or whatever, don't get your hopes up, I think they are good, I just don't know." Their setup was a wait (at least for me, the guy saying Numbers was cool) but - right when they started up, first song, the whole room started jumping, pogoing, bumping, etc, fairly violently, but in a very fun way - there was a negative aspect (from the drunkest in the room), but I would say even though people were being pushed around - they were smiling (yes even the ladies - very good) - so - some people were definitely a bit out of control, but for the most part they threw everyone for a loop and just went off. I don't know these guys but I love 'em. Super fun. Go see 'em if you get a chance. Word to the wise: Watch the drummer. She rules the band, and she's really, REALLY dope. -dave On 11/30/02 8:59 PM, "Kent williams" <kent@avalon.net> wrote:

I didn't have a chance to tell her but she is the thinking man's joan jett. She is a post-drum-machine drummer, meaning she can play a wicked disco beat and keep it robotic tight. They really do remind me a lot of early ramones, talking heads, b-52s all rolled into one. Very much a new-wave revival band, but focusing on the punkier end of the spectrum. If they go to England, they'll be the darlings of the rock press, because they have that out-of-nowhere snotty appeal. They also fit into a spectrum with groups like the Hives, who go back to late-60s garage punk for their style theivery, but Numbers is way dumber and more fun. Not IDM of course, but whatever. I find the more acts I see that are really players, the weaker the computer only stuff sounds. By the way, anyone who wants me to come play, I'm doing a totally live sampling show these days. I sing, I beatbox, I play guitar, beer bottles, hand percussion, rip paper and make a total ass of myself. It all goes into the computer and comes out fucked up. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
