Ya, I went to the first two on Sunday- Cinema Electronica and the Chris Cunningham retrospective. It's the same thing with compilations cds- some of the stuff I was really impressed with, others I was like 'how exactly did this make the cut?' I don't know why I expected differently, but the sound system left much to be desired. Why would anybody organize such an event only to use the in-house speaker system with no lows, no highs, all mid-range honk and very little stereo seperation? Flex was great. Neat dark/ambient/noise track with that one, too. First time I had seen Windowlicker and Come to Daddy.

YES !!! Especially opening with Ae's 2nd Bad Vilbel on very low volume - what an absolute wasted opportunity. We've been fortunate enough to have friends bring over a reel with CC vids on it and screened it in our lounge on a HUGE system with a HUGE screen (Barco projector) and wow! *that* really kicked. It almost has to be a wall of sound to which those visuals of the robotic insect work extremely well to form a whole experience. TG after that the volume was increased... obviously somebody told somebody to turn the knob...

What did you (the collective list-members who've seen this) make of Flex? What was he saying with the piece? Is it about the recurring cycle of domestic violence? Duh? Am I very dumb - or what? (Ha ha, don't answer that one!) Apparently this was the first screening of Flex outside of the installation space in the UK it had been designed for. For me the prize moment was SQPR's Come on My Selector video - so well melded picture to sound. Everything just fitted perfectly. And the screening ended on Monkey Drummer, which was awesomely synchronised. Suffice to say, the guy's great! This was the only screening we attended at the Resfest. I saw Flex during the past Venice Biennial. The sounds for Flex are fantastic (of course).. but the video... I mean, technically it is perfect (I love the final part with the images of the neurons in the brain etc etc)... but the meaning? I think it is just about violence that is able to become peace/love.... I don't see any particular meaning.. it's just a picture of nowadays society.... and I add it is a sad and not-so-orginal picture. ciao e.g.ø -- .. e.g.ø :: http://eeegggooo.cjb.net ___________________________________________ ongoing exhibitions: :. http://www.newmediafest.org/violence/index.html .: http://www.javamuseum.org/2002/2nd/italyfeature/index.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I saw the res in NYC.

If you read the RES nmagazine with the Cunningham interview. He states his disappointment with Flex. He apparently was going for something more abstract and it came off too literal. I'd agree (My girlfriend hated it, haha). The content seems to me to be irrelevant as he was really just looking for a vehicle for some brillant technical ideas. To me, the whole notion of "the body" and "human form" is pretty classic in the art world (and a bit cliche beyond blank subject matter for sketches). I'd say it was more of a study than anything else.

agreed. I really liked seeing Windowlicker again (and on the big screen!) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I saw it as part of Res and as part of the original "Apocolypse" exhibition at the Royal Academy. Within the context of "Apocolypse" (beauty and horror in contemporary art) the mood seemed just right, as part of Res I just reminded myself how fucked up it was. I still think it's absolutely bloody ace. e.g.? said:

You may be pleased to know much of that murky wispyness was an underwater cumshot caught on film, I believe. What a crazy dude.
