Le Tigre is not really IDM, but they borrow so heavily from Chicks On Speed that I thought it demanded some mention. This is an interesting case of reciprocal inspiration; surely Chicks On Speed were familiar with Bikini Kill before they made 'Will Save Us All' and then whaddaya know Kathleen Hanna's new band sounds just like Chicks On Speed. Le Tigre's first S/T album sounds a bit dated already; the new stuff, which comprises most of their live set, is on 'Feminist Sweepstakes' and as the title indicates is just a tad bit on the political side. It was a really fun show (but for the fact that, in DC, not even the queer community knows how to dance), completely packed to the gills (started smelling pretty funny in there halfway through the set), but electrocrash beats and grrrl rock still seem like strange bedfellows to me. Isn't underground dance music political enough without spelling it out on a projection screen? (This from a guy who is going to the Int'l Noise Conspiracy show two weeks from now) On to the relevance: Midwest Product's first album is good, but not as good as the live set I witnessed about a month prior to the release. I was a little disappointed in that the album is much more of the downtempo and atmospheric side and not as much of the Devo-Kraftwerk sound that I enjoyed so furiously at their DC appearance. Oh, and they don't sound like either Autechre or Radiohead. If you caught their live set you probably already own this (I should HOPE SO) and if you didn't you're missing out times two. Improve your odds today and give it a listen (but not while driving in the rain at 2am). I'm looking forward to the new Dead Hollywood Stars. You guys already know that you should buy everything related to Mad Monkey Records, right? I have to point out that le tigre's first album (self titled) was out a year before Will Save Us All. I would tend to think that the inspiration was at first more the other direction, though I'm sure at this point it flows both ways (feminist sweepstakes is on CoS's record label). I also saw le tigre in easthampton the other day, and it was a very fun show despite a few equipment problems. A few people at least do know how to dance in western MA :-) -kyle -- http://mas.cs.umass.edu/~rawlins -- Let's hear it for the vague blur! (P.K.Dick)

Artist GEOFF WHITE Live [information] http://www.remoteagency.com/geoff_white/geoffwhite-info.htm ******************** DEADBEAT [information] http://www.remoteagency.com/scott_monteith/scottmonteith-info.htm SEPTEMBER 2002 Touring in: USA/CANADA Who Is Deadbeat? Hailing from Toronto and Montreal, Deadbeat explores the post-Maurizio dub-techno aesthetic with a driving kick for the dancefloor, at times lapsing sentimental into glitch-reggae jams, as witnessed at the Basic Channel Scion/Tikiman show in Montreal, and other times moving feet and bodies into blissed out frenzies, as crowds at the Deadbeat - Monolake webjam at Mutek 2002 will attest ... Deadbeat has a full-length, Primordia, out on Mitchell Akiyama's intr_version label, and 12"s on Germany's Background, Force Inc, Montreal's Hautec, and Algorithm's Revolver label. **And NEW, HOT off the presses: Deadbeat will be releasing his album of post-dub glitch reggae on Pole's infamous ~scape label.** Primarily known for his funky, microscopic take on minimal house and techno for such labels as Background, Hautec and Revolver, and enjoying critical acclaim for the churning, sub-aquatic 'Primordia' Album on Mitchell Akiyama's Intr_version label, Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat continues to avoid falling under the all too often oversimplified micro-genre label maker. The rising summer temperatures promise to bring forth a slew of new releases exploring new creative tangents and production techniques, sure to impress fans of his previous outputs. Having teamed up with longtime friend Steve Beaupré as Crack Haus for two well received, stomping tracks for Frankfurt label giant Force Inc, including the acclaimed 'Deck the House Remix' for Montreal's goldenboy Akufen, Monteith continues to push the envelope of modern dancefloor techno. The spring also sees two new Deadbeat 12-inches arrive for Canadian label Cynosure entitled 'Garble and Slur', and the debut Crack Haus single currently being negotiated with one of Germany's finest techno imprints...more info coming soon.... Fans of Monteith's more cerebral outings will also not be left out in the cold, with the 'Miso' EP arriving on Revolver in late summer, as well as an as of yet untitled 12 inch for Spanish label Klitekture, who have already released astounding work from minimal heavyweights Mikael Stravostrand, Sutekh, and Twerk to follow in September. 2002 has also seen Monteith continue to forge strong relationships with some of the industrys most respected organizations. In May, Stephan Betke aka Pole, added to his critically acclaimed Staedizsm series with 'Instrumentals', featuring the hiphop inspired Deadbeat track 'Right as Rain'. MUTEK's 2002 compilation also contains a meandering DSP excursion from Monteith entitled 'Farwell Queen Mum', which was specifically edited for the CD. Having performed for some of the world's most reknowned festivals and venues, including various MUTEK affiliated events and Berlins legendary Transmediale, Deadbeat performances have proven to be consistantly engaging and diverse. With his current live performance showcasing material from his upcoming second album, Deadbeat is sure to be an inspiring addition any dancefloor or listening room event.
