Le Tigre is not really IDM, but they borrow so heavily from Chicks On Speed
that I thought it demanded some mention. This is an interesting case of
reciprocal inspiration; surely Chicks On Speed were familiar with Bikini
Kill before they made 'Will Save Us All' and then whaddaya know Kathleen
Hanna's new band sounds just like Chicks On Speed. Le Tigre's first S/T
album sounds a bit dated already; the new stuff, which comprises most of
their live set, is on 'Feminist Sweepstakes' and as the title indicates is
just a tad bit on the political side. It was a really fun show (but for the
fact that, in DC, not even the queer community knows how to dance),
completely packed to the gills (started smelling pretty funny in there
halfway through the set), but electrocrash beats and grrrl rock still seem
like strange bedfellows to me. Isn't underground dance music political
enough without spelling it out on a projection screen?
(This from a guy who is going to the Int'l Noise Conspiracy show two weeks
from now)
On to the relevance:
Midwest Product's first album is good, but not as good as the live set I
witnessed about a month prior to the release. I was a little disappointed in
that the album is much more of the downtempo and atmospheric side and not as
much of the Devo-Kraftwerk sound that I enjoyed so furiously at their DC
appearance. Oh, and they don't sound like either Autechre or Radiohead. If
you caught their live set you probably already own this (I should HOPE SO)
and if you didn't you're missing out times two. Improve your odds today and
give it a listen (but not while driving in the rain at 2am).
I'm looking forward to the new Dead Hollywood Stars. You guys already know
that you should buy everything related to Mad Monkey Records, right?
Tom
