this sort of remains to be seen. i myself was in a tracking group for some
time (pHluid music |
http://phluid.acid.org/). my application preference,
as was for most of the other members, was Impulse Tracker v2.14. over the
years, there was much talk about the development of IT3. with DOS obviously
going by the wayside as far as soundcard driver support and allsorts, IT3
was supposed to be essentially the same interface, but 32bit with a full
windows GUI and capabilities that would take far more advantage of midi,
realtime effects, etc. (elements severely lacking in the DOS version for
obvious reasons). the project has been bounced around from group to group,
from individual to individual, and it's found a new home, but again, there
seems to be little to encourage us fans of the interface that it will be
released before we start worrying about where our social security checks
are. as of right now, IT3 as a concept is the property of a group called
Unreal (
http://www.unreal64.net/dspaudio/). there is a severe lack of
financial backing in the project though, and it's been bogged down there for
some time. previous to that, the challenge was accepted by DSPAudio, Inc.
(
http://www.dspaudio.com/). they decided to move onto their own tracker
application called FLAW, which is also still under construction. both seem
to maintain the "open source music" ethic pretty well, but there's very
little to show for it save for some screenshots and some impressive claims.
feel free to check these two out, but don't hold your breath for a release.

it does still happen from time to time, but with nowhere near as great of a
frequency of the distant yesterday of the scene. i personally still do some
work in IT with a lot of post production to achieve the particular flavor
that .it compression provides, but by and large, i hardly touch it anymore
(save for writing a chiptune in the recent past to be released on a concept
compilation). some people are still hanging on to it, but no one i know
directly is still doing the co-op thing. i imagine i might just for fun or
whatever, but you have your work cut out for you finding a thriving
community, i think.
