Well, it's another day, another IDM album, and another 'what speed is the vinyl supposed to be played at?' query. No smart-arse "if it sounds good, it's the right speed" answers please. Dangerous comment to make there - if you don't look out it'll turn into another 'vinyl vs CD' thread. That reminds me - has anyone noticed that the name 'IDM' is kind of stupid... Seriously though, it does piss me off when I get particularly wierd sounding bit of vinyl with no indication of the correct speed (warp are a particularly bad offender here). All I want to do is listen to it at the same speed the artist recorded/mixed it at, and then if I want to start buggering around with the speed later (which I often do anyway) I can do it because I want to, rather than because I have to. How 'bout some thoughts on the album? I picked it up the other day, and I'm not sure how it's gonna go over with everybody. I tend to like his earlier stuff (RCDevine 12", Ischemic Folks tracks) more than Lipswitch, but I like Aleamapper for different reasons. Ya know those 1 and 2 minute noise interludes between songs on Lipswitch? Well, the majority of Aleamapper are noise tracks like those. I mapped it out- 16 tracks only 4 of which have beats or resemble traditional songs, at least in Richard Devine terms. So the vast majority of the album is made up of these soundscape-y noisy songs. Not exactly what I was expecting, especially after seeing him play a few times over the last couple years, where live he's quite industrial strength pounding grooves. But still good, if I'm in a rubato noisescape mood. Oh ya- record goes at 33.

slightly off topic, but speaking of schematic, does anyone else thing that otto von schirach is downright amazing? especially the 8000 bc release. It's kinda funny, because I NEVER hear any comments about him on the list and there really aren't any resources on him save the schematic web site. does he even exist? Odd, considering that the most amazing sounds I've ever heard have come from him. I think he's what would happen if venetian snares were to huff some ether and play with a blender, banannas, a handful of nails and a microcassette recorder....and sometimes a drum machine. --- ff g <glassmuseum@yahoo.com> wrote:

makes sense. i got this one in today too. much more ambient than his other stuff. i think i like it better than lipswitch, which i did like. however, i'd still be exstatic if he did something with alot more beats and maybe even a bigger variety of tempos. something that just smashed you over the head in with hardcore funk and complexity. also got ahold of the native labs 2LP. I really like his track on there alot. overal a solid comp. - cutups -----Original Message----- From: ff g <glassmuseum@yahoo.com> To: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Saturday, January 12, 2002 7:07 PM Subject: RE: [idm] Aleamapper
