I love music, I listen to at least 8 hours of music each day. Even with almost constantly listening to music, I'm finding there is still far too much music for me to get through. I follow a lot of genres, IDM, ambient, hiphop, experimental, jungle, breakcore, gabber, downtempo, etc. And for each of these genres, a huge amount of new releases comes out every week. How do you put up with the sheer mass of decent music out there? Are there any websites for music of these styles that has really critical reviews? I'm so sick of review based sites that don't have the guts to actually numerically rate a work, to give an honest opinion of what they feel about it. Most review sites seem to pander to artists and labels, worried that they'll lose their promotional copies. I also want to find a site that reliably has sound samples of the week's new releases. Especially in the case of IDM and experimental music, it's very difficult to sort through what's out there because mp3s can be hard to come by. Browsing the skimo release list every week, it seems like every release there is some wonderful amazing thing, which we all know is far from true. :) So I'm looking for a critical dissection of weekly releases that I can rely on for those weeks I'm too lazy to spend an entire day in a record store going through everything... Man, you need a job. (No offense, just a little friendly ribbing!) But seriously, if you have time to spend all day in record stores, or even listen to 8 hours of music, where do you get the cash to buy all these albums? It's a scam I'd love to get in on, for sure. I've truly, honestly never met anyone to whom music was as important as it is to me-- and I was a classical performance major in college-- but even saying that, I'm only AWAKE for about 4 hours that aren't occupied with something that requires the use of my hearing. Ah, maybe it's none of my business. I'd just love to find something-- short of making chicken scratch in a CD store-- that lets me fully indulge my addiction, while still paying rent. C'mooonnnnn, major label attention! By the way, in my ever-so-humble opinion, spending all day in a record store isn't a matter for laziness, it's a friggin PRIVILEGE that should be indulged whenever possible! Don't let it slip by. I'm a computer engineering major, so I spend a lot of time by the computer screen. Very little of what I do requires communication with "the outside world", so I get a lot of time to listen to music. Being in computers also makes it not too difficult to find money for music. And, I've never met anyone else to whom music was as important as it is to me as well. :)

Well, it's not something I do on a daily basis, I do that like once a month. My main point was with the massive amounts of music coming out, I can't really shake this annoying feeling that there's some amazing album out there that'll really blow me away, but I'm wasting my time sifting through mediocricy. :) PS: For those that are in Canada or listen to it on the Internet, be sure to check out Brave New Waves tonight on CBC radio 2.
