Harrison wasn't the only switched-on Beatle -- McCartney loved playing with reel-to-reel/electronics, and even contacted the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (home of the Dr. Who soundtrack, etc.) for them to arrange an electronic score to the song that turned out to be "Yesterday." From what I remember, he was also a major part of the musique concrete on "Tomorrow Never Knows"... -----Original Message----- From: Ben Knowles [mailto:knowles@Colorado.EDU] Sent: Friday, November 30, 2001 5:32 PM To: intelligent dunce music Subject: Re: [idm] and then there were two

actually, tomorrow never knows is all lennon. he claims that was his first, and only, truly drug-inspired song. it's also interesting because 1) it's only one chord (C, i believe), 2) the lyrics are from the tibetan book of the dead, and 3) all the weird tape loops were created by each beatle individually and then brought back to the studio and manipulated/played backwards/etc. the bird-like noises are mccartney laughing (sped up and backwards). BUT, it was harrison's idea to do the backwards guitar solos on revolver. "i'm only sleeping" is the best example. really eerie, gorgeous effect if you ask me. tell me that's not idm! -nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ahh, good to know the musique concrete wasn't really "all Lennon" then. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well, john lennon wrote the song, and john lennon manipulated the tapes. in a way it was a precursor to what he did on strawberry fields and revolution #9 with yoko. harrison didn't have anything to do with it, except perhaps for some incidental sounds. therefore, what you said was misleading, and i called you on it. forgive me for trying to be informative... at least i was polite. nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

No, but "Flying" is maybe the first trip-hop song ;-) BTW the guitar and drum intro of that song is by far the dopest loop no one dares to sample for a hip hop track. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

none of those tools were as cool as neil young and his all-vocoder-vocal techno-rock album. -j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I heard this song a year or two ago on a local(NY) electronic music radio show by a project called the Liverpool Sound Collage Project. It was dark (not very good) d b with samples of John Lennon's voice and the DJ said that PAul McCartney had done it. I didn't believe then and don't now. Anyone know if my suspicions are right or if I'm stupid for not believing that McCartney could bust out crazy beats? _peter ----- Original Message ----- From: John Bush To: intelligent dunce music ;Ben Knowles Sent: 12/1/01 6:12:03 AM Subject: RE: [idm] and then there were two Harrison wasn't the only switched-on Beatle -- McCartney loved playing with reel-to-reel/electronics, and even contacted the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (home of the Dr. Who soundtrack, etc.) for them to arrange an electronic score to the song that turned out to be "Yesterday." McCartney did do two "electronic" albums under the pseudonym the Fireman. There's info about it on AllMusic.com, if you want to know more.
