So just got this from PBE (more info on the release at http://www.touch.demon.co.uk/releases/Tone14.html) Esentially it's a collection of sound files designed to be used as ringtones on future, more flexible cellular phones that can play arbitrary soundfiles. (I'm sure some aren't actually intended to be used, but to comment on ringtones in general, etc etc) Interesting...this reminds me of the rumor that Brian Eno worked on some of the system noises for Windows 95. Does anyone know of other instances of utilitarian sound design by artists? For example: you know how Windows lets you select 'sound themes'? I'd love to have one designed by (insert the name of your favorite idm artist here). just daydreaming... Lukas

it is quite easy to design your own sound theme based off of your favorite idm artist... gather up all the cd's you have of them, find the sounds you want and extract the audio off of the cd, give that sound a name and save it to your hard drive. click "start"/"control panel"/"sounds" and associate the sounds you want with the actions you want. i'm sure theme packages have already been put together for the more well known idm artists, just try searching for " "first_name last_name", "desktop theme" " at google for example, http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Aphex+Twin%22%2C+%22desktop+theme%22&hl=en if you don't find anything on the artist you are looling for, try just "theme", or "windows theme" --- Lukas Bergstrom <lukas@pair.com> wrote:

This is true, although the only one I know he definitely did was the start up sound which, by the way, annoys the fuck out of me. Actually, I hate all system sounds, and have them all turned off, but that's just me. Anyway, you can confirm that he did it by finding that file and looking at the author info bit in something like media player. Dude I cant wait until they start making IDM sample cd's that come with casio samplers and you can buy generic IDM mix cds with stupid titles like "Super smart music 2002: IDM in a new era" at Wal-Mart. Or when Brittany Spears gets old and crusty and asks Squarepusher to remix her so she can feel cool. I cant wait... --- Eddie Symons <eddie.symons@jesterinteractive.com> wrote:

i think i remember reading that Nobukazu Takemura did the sounds for the new Sony robo-puppies... can anyone confirm? there definitely needs to be more of this utlitarian collaboration in the states (europe seems more open/appreciative of such things). though in the Anchorage (NYC) last summer one of the artists displayed had also designed the new 6-trains (which kind of suck) and the new MetroCard dispersal machines (which are very userfriendly and convenient and colorful)... nat a new home for indie rock and electronic http://www.littlefurythings.com

I have a press release at home about this, but I'm traveling right now. Yeah, he did much of the sound for the Aibo, and the physical design was largely by Katsura Moshino. Moshino made an animated film that is included in the Takemura CD, "Sign," due out in January on Thrill Jockey. Marc On Fri, 30 Nov 2001, nat hawks wrote:

Oh, here's one reference to Takemura's role in the AIBO, on the Sony site. It's in Japanese, but the lower photo is of Takemura. http://www.aibo.com/lm/artists/index.html He and Moshino worked on the latest AIBOs, which are named Latte and Macaron. Marc On Fri, 30 Nov 2001, Marc Weidenbaum wrote:
