Just a quick question, and I feel I'll get the best answer here. I'm in the market for a new record player, but confess that I know very little about them. Nothing fancy, just so I can play my records clearly. I don't want to spend more than 100-150 bucks, and would even consider a used player if it makes sense (the needle makes the difference yes?). Hit me with your suggestions (player model and needle type), and bombard me with as much technical mumbo jumbo as you feel fit. Thanks so much in advance. -Nathan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I go to pawn shops and goodwills ;-) But seriously, the cheapo belt drives from Pro Sound ( http://www.pssl.com ) will give you years of reliable service if all you want to do is play records. I learned to DJ on decks MUCH crappier than those. If you've got a higher budget than that, check out the Rega Planar 2 http://www.needledoctor.com/showitem.cfm?catnum=1&parentcatnum=27&itemnum=37 Which is the most affordable audiophile deck. These are meant to be installed with a custom wall mount, like a piece of art. They cost $495, which is about what a 1200 costs. Buying a Rega is a commitment NOT to DJ ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Depends on if you're looking for something to dj off of, if you're an audiophile, or if you just want something to listen to records on. If you want to get into djin'g, i'd seriously recommend the Techniquies 1200 mk II line. They run 350-500 new, and not much less used, since they wear very well over time. So its a bit out of your pricerange. If you want an intro dj table, make sure to at least get a table that's direct drive rather than belt drive. Audiophile tables seem to run even more than techniques. I imagine you're mostly paying for the stylus/needle, although i'm not that familiar with this area. For something that "just works", i'd recommend scouring garage sales, local thrift shops, etc. I've found some good tables that way for pretty cheap prices ($10-50) But make sure to test them first. One consideration though is that they may not have needles that you can easily get replacements for anylonger. You could also go for low-end newmark or gemini tables. They'll run about $80-$150, and are usually belt driven. But they are sturdy enough and will certainly have replaceable needles. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nathan Lueckenhoff" <Nathan.Lueckenhoff@colorado.edu> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2001 6:37 PM Subject: [idm] OT: Record Players

yeah totally depends what your angle is. scratching playing whatever. techniques 1200s are the standby really but alot of vestax tables are sweet with more features for scratching fun. i have a vestax PDX-2000 but its not cheap. you'll also want a good mixer too. gemini makes a cheap 2 channel one which to start is all u really need, i have a vestax pmc-170a. fun stuff, but again, not the cheapest. really for a dj mixer its all about the crossfader, so you want one with at least one of those. stanton needles are pretty good and the stanton 505 is "best for scratching" according to them anyway. stanton also makes some decent and cheaper tables and mixers. oh its also a consideration that if your going to be doing alot of crate digging thru old scratched up cheap ass records to get some ghetto table from a pawn or garage sale type thing so you dont wreck your good needle on crap records. have fun installing the stylus! http://www.mp3.com/cell

I would advise a rega p3 or planar 3, but I just bought a systemdek IIx 900 for £140 It has a good rb250 arm (rega same as one on p2 planar2) these deks go for less and although old if in good nick are nearly as good (design based on and little different apart from rewired arm) the audionote TT1 (what hifi best buy £600-1k turntable this year!) you will however need a decent amp to get the best results but again for £150 you can get a blindinng amp if you know what your doing. think this should be on another list so I wont go on but budget systems can be audiophile. d my setup systemdek IIx 900 audiolab 8000a b&w matrix speakers ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kent williams" <kent@avalon.net> To: "Nathan Lueckenhoff" <Nathan.Lueckenhoff@colorado.edu> Cc: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2001 3:43 PM Subject: Re: [idm] OT: Record Players

If you just want a workhorse that'll last you the rest of your life, by far the best route is a used audio store. People are still unloading their turntables that have been sitting in basements for the past decade, and I've bought phenomenal equipment at bargain basement prices. Thorenz turntables in pristine condition, priced at $400 new when purchased in the '70s, at $50 now. A sturdy-as-hell Pioneer PL-530 direct drive for $75. The jewel: An Empire turntable from mid '70s, housed in walnut and with one hell of a tone arm, for $250 that sold for $800 new. The thing about a good used audio store is that they comb the sales and used equipment stores themselves, find the diamonds and fix them up for you. Here in St. Louis there's a store run by a genius who appreciates used equipment the way you appreciate Aphex Twin and gets all giddy when he finds a pearl. Any city of consequence has a store like this; you just gotta find it. I'd do this over buying a Numark any day. As far as styli go: can't go wrong with an Ortofon. RR
