right, speaking of the "other" murakami -- takeshi, of the fantastic and weird flattened out cartoony mushroom paintings -- if anyone's got nobukazu takemura's "finale," the CD released in conjunction with issey miyake, takeshi murakami did the cover for it. lots of freaky/happy flower faces on vines, with his weird eyeball-spotted fungi inside. great stuff, and a good reminder of why i don't do mushrooms... ;) cheers phil

Just got my latest copy of The Wire the yesterday - I'm at present a subscriber and have been reading the magazine pretty continuously for the past 15 years... I was quite amused to see this list getting a good bashing in cover star's Kid606 interview by both its subject and interviewer Peter Shapiro: PS: "Of course, electronic music, particularly in these postrave days, is about the least dangerous thing around - as smug and smooth and uniform and unchallenging as a freeloading fashion PR bathing in Creme De La Mer in an Ian Schrager boutique hotel..." - So danger is the most important element of music - darn I hadn't realised... Confield is easy listening, BoC pure indulgence, Tetsu Inoue, Mouse on Mars, Pole et al all merely creating paeans to consumerism - I'd better give all those cds away... PS: "Depedro [Kid606's real name] sneers, half declaring war on the pockface IDM massive..." - having acne's a crime as well apparently... K: "It sucks that the IDM list [the Internet's long running "intelligent dance music" newsgroup] is like our drama to make things seem more exciting" Kid606 moans a lot about the obsession of IDM fans with equipment, etc, etc. I know this is his schtick which is why I'm amused, but I do resent the trashing of what for better or worse is some kind of online community. All the best, Colin.

It seems to me that every interview with the Kid takes this angle. Every single one is like "Dude!!!! Kid 606 is declaring war on the dorky IDM scene! He's gonna tear it a new asshole! Also, he hates the IDM list and he thinks its for losers!" Yes, there is a lot of pretty lame shit happening on our list, but I think we get by with a decent amount of relevant discussion of music. And yes, for better or for worse, this some kind of online community. Not to mention, I'm sure that were it not for the list, Kid 606's label would have a lot less exposure and sales, right? And despite all his insulting comments toward our list, its still probably home to the majority of people who are into his music. You'd think he'd have more animosity towards all the people that boo him when he opens up for rock acts like Butthole Surfers and Fantomas. And maybe I just haven't been paying attention to the right threads, but I don't think I've seen much gear obsession going on here in a while. -Aaron "down with the scene" Meyers

If K6 hates us so much, why does he stay subscribed? Fuqqem. Who needs drama? Last time I checked, IDM was about making interesting sounds, not camps-vs-camps bullshit. m@2zo www.thechisa.com On Sat, 29 Sep 2001, Aaron D Meyers wrote:

You know, Miguel (kid606) is a smart guy. From my contact with him, is as much about spreading peace, love and understanding in the world as the next person. I had a pretty long conversation with him when he was here about music biz, the internet, yada yada. I hate to break it to you, the IDM list is fairly far down his list of concerns. If he mentions it in interviews, well, the IDM list is a target of opportunity -- there are people and institutions he's way more annoyed by, but politically it would be a bad thing to slag them in print. Any smart guy who wants to have a career doing this kind of music knows about the IDM list, and has to come to some sort of understanding of it. They know that the subscribers here are the early adopters -- the ones that start the word of mouth buzz that's essential to moving product. On the other hand they know that a sizable percentage of the people here are cranks with no lives, as obsessive and irritating as the worst trekkies in bad Klingon latex appliances; so they don't take it any more seriously than they absolutely must. And people who are actually working at making music don't have time for the kind of petty crap that goes on here. Those that can, do. Those that can't, subscribe to IDM. And yes I'm a producer, and yes I'm on IDM. Make of that what you will... On Sat, 29 Sep 2001, jason w wrote:
