What has happened to IDM? I went out last night to hear Kit Klaton, I love many of his records, and I expected to hear some music, instead it was just noise from a PA that had no mid and sounded like mud... Isn't there any live acts and records coming out that sound like music? you know, melody, harmony... Can someone please help me out and list a few records and artists who are still making music and not random noise based music? I respect and understand that some of you, many of you, really like the way IDM has gone, but for me, I'm finding it difficult to maintain vision in this genre. I could list artists and records as examples of this turn. =((( a sad Sebastian / astaplatz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Can't say that I'm surprised. I started losing faith in the Buttholes with Piouhgd, and completely gave up with Independent Worm Saloon. I've heard that they still put on a good live show, but as far as recorded stuff goes, they're more than 10 years past their prime. man guys, lighten up on the old Surfers :) i would have to say that next to pink floyd and skinny puppy, the surfers are next in line as far as influencing what i am listening to today...and now that they fully embrace and abuse electronics and beats, they have come full circle... for me, the surfers will never surpass 1987's hairway to steven, yet i still love 'em and support them...maybe i'm crazy, possibly because i'm from texas? and just like floyd and puppy, the buttholes still put on a DAMN good live show. -- ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^- omz beautamous loaf recordings http://www.hotweird.com/loaf/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah I wish they were, at least the stuff that I heard sounded like they went down to thier local electronic beat store and bought a can of pre-fab cheezball alt-electronic-rock beats and did nothing creative with them.Maybe I'm wrong though and there is some good stuff on that new album, I havent heard the whole thing. I mean they used to do really fucked up wierd shit with sound back in the day and it sounds like they quit doing that in the interest of making money. Same goes with Ween, they used to be great thier first few albums and then quit getting stoned and fucking around and got real "talent" or something, and then thier music just got really bad. It sounds like RDJ still has a little of that fucking around and fucking with people kind of thing going on with his music- I was listening to a few of the piano tracks off that new album going "this has to be a joke because this song is just so repugnant and stupid he wants to see how people react"..not only that but as a friend of mine pointed out is Richard D James a made up name, because the initials are Dick D.J. Go figure... Well at least Kid 606 will piss off all the jocks that show up... --- omz <omz23@speakeasy.net> wrote:

I'd recommend reading two things, Sebastian. "Newman: The Instant" and "The Sublime and the Avant-Garde," both brief essaysby Jean-Pierre Lyotard. The former is a simple introduction to Lyotard's take on the sublime [breaking from both Burke and Kant], and the latter is a much more detailed analysis. One of his major points is that the avant-garde often forgets the possibility of nothing; in the case of music, of NO sound, NO melody, nothing figuratively digstinguishable. While many IDMers still work within those conventions you're looking for, others have realized the fact that by not PRESENTING but actually being the PRESENCE, they are exploring exciting and uncharted territory. peace m... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

good music, destiny's child, oval, john wiese, missy elliot, or what have you, should be able to show you why you should like it without having to rhapsodize over it in pretentious academic tongues. i mean, i like all sorts of music, someone here made a really good point a few weeks ago-- "the difference between noise and music is intent"-- but you either like something or you don't... i don't think that you should have to read an instructional manual on how to appreciate something in order to enjoy it... gregory --- ". m e ." <runawayslinky@hotmail.com> wrote:

Yeah, but do you enjoy it? "Don't write the email, *BE* the email..." Actually, forget I said anything. I like bits of everything and hate bits of everything - to each their own. What I really wanted to say is: isn't it a little early for the list to head towards this discussion again? I mean, the "It's all noise these days, what happened to Black Dog and B12?" discussion comes up every few months, I know, but it feels like we just had it. Can't we all just wait until December to have it again? -Adam --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Can't we all just wait until ~December to have it again? I'm just trying to see if there are some gems out there that I am missing, some artists that haven't jumped on the Confield wagon... It's a futile mission, but I persevere. I was not trying to drive us down that road of music vrs. noise- it has been done before on this list many times in the past year that I have been here. I don't care if we all like it or not, I'm just into the music I like. =))) A. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
