totally. belows began a process of mechanization by offering an external lung to play with a constancy that was impossible to achieve by mere human effort. i think the progression goes somethin like: flutes > reed instruments > bagpipes > harmoniums > organs > synthesizers those elaborate 16th to 19th century church organs in Europe were all powered by bellows in the pre-electronic era. with their keyboard interface and many stops (the predecessor to 'patches') they seem like the direct precursor to certain kinds of synthesizers. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

While there are limits to the amount of expression you can put into an organ performance (no velocity for example), going to chruch must have been an awesome experience then. I've only heard organs in cathedrals a couple of times - not being christian any more and the fact that grand choral performances are no longer the norm - but a big organ in a huge church, the vibes are amazing. Some of those organs put out stupendous amounts of bass, and many cathedrals were designed with an eye to good acoustics. Imagine living in the 1700s and hearing Bach play Toccata and fugue in D Minor live. Totally I(-D)M :-) Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
