Heck, people and things are constantly changing. "the same man can never pass through the same river again" and all that... was that Plato or Aristotle? Something like that. But that doesn't quite get at the nub of the issue. It seems like a cop-out to say that someone doesn't enjoy music in the same way simply because they've changed. When I go back and listen to some of my old favorites from back in my more "innocent" days, I still absolutely love them. I'm not saying I *haven't* changed. I enjoy my older stuff on a different level, and I freely admit to not being as into Nine Inch Nails as used to be! But it's not true to suggest that a person can never enjoy music on the same, intimate level again. I'm finding that all it takes for me is return to more "innocent" teenager-like listening habits. Consume less, spend more time on what I have. I think people who have always had more money to consume a lot will probably relate to this a lot less than those of us who grew up poorer. I'm not trying to make this a class issue, now. I'm just saying that, when you're lucky to get more than 2 or 3 new albums in a year, you're a lot more intimate with what you *do* have, and with mix tapes that you share/trade with friends. I'm only beginning to appreciate that more now that I've been able to have so much music all at once. My girlfriend's kind of been teaching me indirectly; I've noticed for some time now how much she really knows all of her music. She can sing along with anything instantly, or hum the tunes if it's instrumental. She even knows stuff if you just mention the title. She has a lot less music than I do, and granted she's into kind of different stuff, and granted some people just have greater ability when it comes to remembering music. However, I used to be a lot more like that when I was younger and had less music. I remember having less than 50 albums and thinking *that* was a lot. Man, I *knew* that stuff. I just don't know music the same way anymore, and it's not just because I've changed. It's my habits, and those are like clay - moldable according to my will. -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Precisely! I shouldn't post so much pedantic crap; I should wait to see if someone else manages to say it as concisely as you just did. I would only add to that that, for me, what's missing is the amount of time I used to spend with any given album. There are still things out there like Proem, Chris Clark, BoC, that I really really love, but I don't give enough time to. What's hard, but I'm working on for myself, is recognizing the stuff that just doesn't float my personal boat as much, and not worrying much about being familiar with it. That's why I'm selling off a bunch of stuff lately - it's just stuff that, although it's nice, it just doesn't fit me that well. I also don't need every single EP or single by artists I like. (especially when I can gather my fave B-sides & compilation tracks together and make a new 'album' on CDr... hehehe :) -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? damn, you're perceptive. i mean, you just assessed my whole personality based on the content of a one-paragraph post. who do you do it? is it, like, a gift? can i learn how to do that? here, let me try...ummm, let's see, based on your 3-line post, i would say that you are a judgemental asshole given to making unfounded generalizations. geee, that wasnt as hard as i thought... ok, so look...chill the fuck out and go take your angst out on someone/thing else. and if you hate this "shit" list and the music on it so much, unsubscribe. oh, but i forgot, it provides you with a forum to make yourself feel better at other's expense. btw, for what it's worth, idm makes up about 1% of my music collection--i subscribed to learn more about it. if you want to talk about other genres, i'm down for it. just calm down first. colin. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Believe me, all the people I've met who are on this list think this has turned into a rather "shit" list and we all kind of wonder why we're still subscribed. Yes, I kind of wonder why you are still subscribed too :-) It's not worse than any other music mailing list I've been on, and a lot better than some. I lightly criticised a DJ's set once on another genre list, and got publicly deluged by hate mail from all his friends and was no longer welcome at some events. At least the IDM list doesn't suffer from this sort of horrible 'groupthink'. Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
