Heck, people and things are constantly changing. "the
same man can never pass through the same river again"
and all that... was that Plato or Aristotle?
Something like that.
But that doesn't quite get at the nub of the issue.
It seems like a cop-out to say that someone doesn't
enjoy music in the same way simply because they've
changed. When I go back and listen to some of my old
favorites from back in my more "innocent" days, I
still absolutely love them.
I'm not saying I *haven't* changed. I enjoy my older
stuff on a different level, and I freely admit to not
being as into Nine Inch Nails as used to be!
But it's not true to suggest that a person can never
enjoy music on the same, intimate level again. I'm
finding that all it takes for me is return to more
"innocent" teenager-like listening habits. Consume
less, spend more time on what I have. I think people
who have always had more money to consume a lot will
probably relate to this a lot less than those of us
who grew up poorer. I'm not trying to make this a
class issue, now. I'm just saying that, when you're
lucky to get more than 2 or 3 new albums in a year,
you're a lot more intimate with what you *do* have,
and with mix tapes that you share/trade with friends.
I'm only beginning to appreciate that more now that
I've been able to have so much music all at once.
My girlfriend's kind of been teaching me indirectly;
I've noticed for some time now how much she really
knows all of her music. She can sing along with
anything instantly, or hum the tunes if it's
instrumental. She even knows stuff if you just
mention the title. She has a lot less music than I
do, and granted she's into kind of different stuff,
and granted some people just have greater ability when
it comes to remembering music. However, I used to be
a lot more like that when I was younger and had less
music. I remember having less than 50 albums and
thinking *that* was a lot. Man, I *knew* that stuff.
I just don't know music the same way anymore, and it's
not just because I've changed. It's my habits, and
those are like clay - moldable according to my will.
