It's a little ironic to me that someone is putting down one of the pioneer musical genres of early electronic music. If it wasnt for raps inovation and experimentation we would still be listening to elitist academic boring stuff or disco white people music. You can hear the influence of rap all over IDM, and while there is a lot of crap out there, especially on the radio, it doesnt mean there isnt some really good stuff out there. Of course you are setting yourself up for dissapointment if you listen to the radio or MTV in the first place, but thats the price you pay for bieng a wanker. Check out Anti-pop Consortium or any of the chocalate Industries stuff. --- gwen volack <gvolack@hotmail.com> wrote:

Brief point of contention - while I wasn't there for it, my understanding is that disco originated with deep roots in the black (and gay) community, and evolved as a racially integrated phenomenon. So "disco white people music" isn't quite correct. At least, not the disco of the Paradise Garage, etc. - perhaps the later disco of Saturday Night Fever, etc. Quick to pick a nit, Philip

I agree (I wasn't there either, but we can both read). Similarly, house music and all that Detroit stuff had a big black influence, not least because TR-808/909s were cheap and easily available in the 80s while all the happening musicians were rushing out to buy Korg Wavestations. Techno music (by which I include everything from cheesey rave to psy trance to IDM) seems to have wound up as a largely white phenomenon, not least because of the perception that you need a bunch of expensive gear (and serious gearheadedness) to make it, while a single Akai MPC or (previously cheap) SP1200, some decks, and a chill record selection are sufficient to put together the most ill hip-hop record. In the Bay Area at least, the black people I've met at techno parties who are into making music mention that, the fact that the techno crowd is 99% white, and the drug-taking patterns as the main reason that there are so few black people on the techno scene.
