If you like the ATR sound, go for his albums "The Destroyer" and also his first stuff in that vein, "Squeeze The Trigger". "The Destroyer" was composed on a bet/dare with a friend, who wanted to see if Alec was up to composing an entire album, listenable as such, that was breakbeat hardcore, and functions surprisingly well as a complete listen. The prototype IMO of the whole DHR sound as a label is to be found here. "Squeeze The Trigger" is basically a collection of singles from an earlier period and while there's good stuff to be found a lot of it is homogenized, 12" one-off stuff and not as well mastered as "Destroyer". Plus "Destroyer" takes a lot of the ideas/structures and advances them quite a bit. For other more 'cerebral' stuff there's, well, quite a bit. Alec was on Mille Plateaux for quite a while before he went and got his own imprint. For my taste I prefer "Generation Star Wars" and "Limited Editions 1990-94" which is pretty forward in its own right. "Hypermodern Jazz" and the "Iceland Sessions" are OK but not particularly super in my book- both are kind of concept records, ventures into fruity electronic jazz and slow, pan sonicesque minimalism, respectively. He also has a 3CD box set, the first release on DHR's IDM sublabel Geist, which features highlights from all his MP releases before he split with them. It's pretty good, but good luck finding one. I bought a copy for my college radio station, now I kind of wish I'd hung onto it. Last but not least are his contributions to the "Electric Ladyland" series on MP, sort of the plodding German answer to Ninjatune's "Earthrise" comps I guess, breakbeats and such with all manner of weirdness on top and underneath, something I thought was pretty exciting but apparently nobody else did, otherwise they might still be releasing new additions... I downloaded a few tracks from Napster a few months ago that were Alec Empire + Techno Animal. I love the songs and have looked for the album, but can't seem to find anything out about it. I don't know anything about Alec Empire, and I've been behind on Techno Animal, so I'm wondering if these mp3s were mis-labelled or something. Some of the songnames: Temple of the Yellow Snake, Kamikaze Space Programmer, Ultrasonic, Caucasian Deathmask (my favorite title). Anyone? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! The first exposure that I had to the breakcore scene was via Alec Empire's "Destroyer" album which still rates somewhere on my top 10. I really have liked everything he has done (not counting the ATR stuff) except for one album that I am not sure if I like or not. "Nintendo Teenage Robots" is such a painful album to listen to. I appreciated the attempt at doing something different but it isn't exactly an album that I would put on at a social gathering. ...Sounds like he figured out what sounds the original Nintendo gaming machine could produce and ran with it, in a very interesting way.

Yup- in the last Time Out NY, he was dissing on their current roster as being too obsessed with the latest gear.

All four are pretty excellent- Hypermodern Jazz was exactly how I always hoped "acid jazz" would sound like- n degrees of loopiness in programming with feeling "jokey" a la Senor Coconut (of course, this is not at all what acid jazz aspires to, but in terms of semantics...). Ltd Editions is melodic, slightly downtempo techno which wouldn't sound out of place on the AI comp. Iceland Sessions is certainly the most minimal (though much too cavernous in feel to remind me of the blistering Panasonic). GSW is sort of a weird triangulation of all of his aesthetics and very lovely as well. His final record for MP was "Les Etoiles des Filles Mortes" or some such- he claimed it to be Stockhausen influenced and it's definitely the most abstract of the releases. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

ATR did back up for NiN a year or two ago in Brixton, London - they were amazing...a bit different live to what they do on their records...the crowd hated them, 'cause they were mostly sad goth types...they kept booing, and crying..."he's too ugly to be musical, trent reznor is much prettier", etc.... Basically, they came on, Alec had a guitar, and went up to the mic, the drum machines started, the synths started going...he plucked a few chords, took the guitar, smashed it on the ground (pretty much left it there for the rest of the gig), grabbed the mic and started squeeling into it...meanwhile the lady and gent behind (can never remember their name, and ain't willing to go upstairs to look it up...Nic Endo is one...eh...yeah...) stood twiddling stuff, slowing the drum machine down, and speeding it up, pretty much randomly...the sound got more and more distorted, lots of clipping, delay units going into overdrive...a general mess (would say cacophony, but thats so pretentious sounding) of sound...I kept jumping up and down, screaming...what a great gig...just for the fact that all the NiNers were so pissed off by it... :) RoNAn P.S. NiN were quite good too... P.P.S. I know this doesn't answer your question...but...ah feck it... P.P.P.S. I think they released that gig on CD too... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Millar" <tmillar@mbayweb.com> To: <elephnt@rootrec.net>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 7:22 AM Subject: Re: [idm] alec empire
