A friend of mine is all excited about a certain kind of music that hasn't been very clearly pigeon-holed, and I've decided to ask around and see if anyone has some suggestions about what else he might listen to. I think it's pretty likely someone on here will have some ideas, even if this is not under the narrow definition of IDM... Basically, he likes things like Skull, more recent DJ Krush, the Shi-Ra-Nui originals on that Sub Rosa versus Shi-Ra-Nui album... I'd describe it as ragged instrumental hip-hop. He uses words like "muddy", "slab-like" and "willful" when he's getting enthused about it. He definitely enjoys stuff that is happy to fall out of time and tonality, as well as the use of found sound as some kind of riff or melody. Before anyone suggests it, while he's happy with things to be dirty and crusty sounding, he definitely doesn't seem fond of the kind of aggro or evil vibe of eg. Techno Animal. But if anyone has any other ideas I'd be keen to line up a surprise pressy or two for him. : ) thanks, Michael np. continuing in a similar vein but moving a little further on, it sounds like DJ Vadim would be exactly what hes looking for. His stuff on ninja tune is all very good, but personally i prefer his recordings on his own Jazz Fudge label under the name andre gurov ...... minimal instrumental hip hop, nicely edgy and complicated drum programming, just enough funny business to keep your interest but no where near enough to scare you away.... his "the isolationist" album, also on jazz fudge, a collaboration between vadim and anti pop consortium, is excellent. He might also want to check out anything and everything coming out of the Anticon stable ( www.anticon.com) if he wants to hear truly individual, independent, and progressive hip hop.... id recomend "music for the advanced listener", a label compilation .... the "them" album ..... buck 65 "man overboard" ..... fuck it, everything they touch turns to gold...... the Clouddead series of 10inch releases is also fantastic, tho not on anticon itself (i believe its on Mush and also liscensed by Big Dada in the UK?), it does feature anticon affiliated producers and mc's.....i cant recomend this one highly enough.... or stop listening to it daniel / cystem --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

See if you can find Bombay the Hard Way : Guns, Cars, and Sitars. Its instrumental hip-hop whose samples lie in the soundtracks to old 1970's Indian (Bollywood) films. Its samples are... 'crusty'ish sounding, very dirty and yet the record has a sense of humor about itself (peep the title or the names to some of the tracks such as : Punjabis, Pimps, and Playas). Some of the samples themselves are really silly.. All in all its a very fun, very mellow record. The Automator threw it together, DJ Shadow did the drums for some of the tracks.. Its fun stuff. Although someone else recommended the soundtrack for Ghost Dog (Though methinks they really meant the score, becuz the soundtrack is a bunch of crappy wu rap, not instrumentals), I wouldn't recommend that because RZAs beats are pretty clean sounding and not really gritty per sae, though they are still tight as fuck IMO. I would add the new Beneath Autumn Sky record (hefty) to this list. And of course theres always the instrumental tracks that come on hiphop 12"s, like MF Doom's "the Mic", the vocals are great but if thats not your thing then theres an instrumental. Rza's ghostdog soundtrack is really good too except for the fact that the US edition is full of some blang blang (ok they're not that but I just felt like saying blang blang) songs that aren't even in the film. I assume that the japanese version has the original tracks but I'm not up for spending $30. Also along those lines are some of the Mr Scruff 12s on pleasure records. Oh yeah, theres always Req who I've heard has a deal with warp now. The cash ep by pbo on schematic is great too only I don't think you can find that one all that easily but his dirty dozen cd compiles those tracks. On a completely irrelevant note. I recently picked up a manchester compilation from 89 called "North, the sound of the dance underground", it was mostly acid house stuff by a bunch of no m=names with voodoo ray throw in to get your attention. Well, anyway when I got home and nerdily looked at the record I found that most of the no namers were actually songs written by various members of A Certain Ratio, right on!!! just when you thoought that I had bought all of the acr records I can find, up pops this one. Anyway, I'm still looking for that Sir Horatio dub 12 that they put out in 81. I can't help it, I've got to mention ACR, they rule!!! ____________________________________________ Adesh Deosaran Uneven Foundation T 1(718)349-1578 F 1(718)504-4010 adesh@unevenfoundation.com www.unevenfoundation.com -----Original Message----- From: J.
