continuing in a similar vein but moving a little further on, it sounds like
DJ Vadim would be exactly what hes looking for. His stuff on ninja tune is
all very good, but personally i prefer his recordings on his own Jazz Fudge
label under the name andre gurov ...... minimal instrumental hip hop,
nicely edgy and complicated drum programming, just enough funny business to
keep your interest but no where near enough to scare you away.... his "the
isolationist" album, also on jazz fudge, a collaboration between vadim and
anti pop consortium, is excellent.
He might also want to check out anything and everything coming out of the
Anticon stable ( www.anticon.com) if he wants to hear truly individual,
independent, and progressive hip hop.... id recomend "music for the advanced
listener", a label compilation .... the "them" album ..... buck 65 "man
overboard" ..... fuck it, everything they touch turns to gold......
the Clouddead series of 10inch releases is also fantastic, tho not on
anticon itself (i believe its on Mush and also liscensed by Big Dada in the
UK?), it does feature anticon affiliated producers and mc's.....i cant
recomend this one highly enough.... or stop listening to it
