Woo hoo! Much fun was had by all. Otto was crunchier than I expected, more aggressive. That polka-with-chubby-white-guy-rapping tune I thought was confusing, but overall was great fun. Phoenecia was a bit more subdued, more atmospheric than I've seen them in the past. Not as loopy as Randa Roomet, nothing even close to as noisy as Odd Jobs. To start up this controversy again: To paraphrase Quiny Jones- "The term 'rap music' is an oxymoron. I hear the rap, but where's the music?" There was a whole lotta beats and extremely complex rhythmic programming going on, but not much in the way of bass lines, melody or harmony. It's the same reason I'm so turned off by a lot of the Ant Zen stuff. Fascinating the first couple times you listen to it (on cd I mean), but it gets really old really fast. I hadn't had Lipswitch for more than a few months before dumping it off at the used store. It was wonderful to see so many people at an idm show so absolutely intent on dancing. Superior vibe all night. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Lipswitch is highly melodic. With a bunch of texture bits poking in all over the place, imagine that the difference between those scrapes and wiggles are similar to the differences in pitch of a piano being considered the elements of a melody. There's only so many notes that a harmony can be created from, but there's a whole world of textures out there. :) Certainly there are people making noise for noise sake, but I don't think the Schematic label musicians are any of them, except for maybe Otto. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

What were you doing? Dancing? Jesus, haven't you been paying attention? I actually liked Otto's set the most, and I'd never heard of him until last night. His set was a grumpy hipster IDM lister's nightmare though; even the most beyond-uber-LA people were dancing around and shakin' it. It was cool to see so many people dancing around and being generally fun to music that isn't the usual club fare. However, everyone will be happy to know there weren't many of those filthy ravers who "eat XTC and dance to trance but they do not exert themselves to a point of ecstasy with rhythmic movements." Phew! I hate it when people distract me when I'm trying to be cool, and ravers are very distracting in that regard. While I was sitting down, I was handed a nifty cd-r by someone called logreybeam. We listened to it on the way home, and it sounds pretty cool. Floaty melodies and little teeny IDM beats. I noticed they have mp3s at www.soundmangle.com for anyone interested. Anyway, thanks for the cd-r logreybeam, wherever you are. ---- "There is no gang of 'intelligent techno' freaks here who break showroom windows to steal pocket calculators." - Jouni Alkio http://component.robotcore.net jeff@spof.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I dunno....at first I thought that Otto's album was complete shite, but now I can't get enough of it. Granted it is very noisy...but its so damn wicked! It kinda makes me think of d&b 10 years into the future...the beats are insane....and yeah there is no melody really to this disc, but hey sometimes dark, evil beats are a good thing. erik np: 8000 B.C. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Once again, I was very pleased with the ELM vibe... Otto was off the hook. Phoenicia was good, but not as good as I expected... The best thing about the show was that the majority of the people were dancing their asses off. Wow, people looked genuinely elated and I couldnt wipe an idiotic grin off my face... RD finished off the night spinning the best set i've ever heard him spin. I hope this trend of just letting go and not giving a shit spreads through the IDM scene like wildfire. And let me just add to that by saying that guys who dance, with rhythm or not (its the uninhibited thing) are HOT. ;) Longreybeam is really good. (So is mintyfresh).
