Introducing the IDM - MODERATED list... the signal-to-noise ratio has been over- whelming on the idm list for quite some time now so in an effort to develop a much on-topic & civil discussion forum i have just created an idm-moderated list using the YahooGroups list service. the list is MODERATED by me and it will be used exclusively for the discussion of idm, ambient, techno, dub, electronica, downtempo, & experimental music. Off-topic and aimless threads will not be tolerated nor will discussions about mp3s, bootlegging, what is idm, fanboy worship, self promotions, sale lists, music production, hobbies outside music, etc. abuse of these rules could result in expulsion from the idm-m list. i will be tyranical about these rules only to insure quality list content. List membership is by permission-only so i have to authorize all members. I will authorize all new members but this feature also allows me to block repeat offenders from resubbing to the list. This idm-m list was just created last night so it's still in the development stage. You can subscribe now but keep in mind it may go though a few changes in the next few weeks but only with the purpose of making the list better. So welcome all who want to talk about and find out about music and NOTHING BUT music. To subscribe to the idm-m list visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/idm-m btw: i will continue posting my messages to the full idm list so those of you who want a forum with more 'liberal' posting policies can remain on this list. -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've (un)subscribed to IDM numerous times do to the varying quality of the discussion/mail throughput and I applaud your efforts to create order where chaos prevails. but, I just can't stand using web based discussion boards. Other than supporting Yahoo, I don't like seeing ads and downloading 60k of html/images every time I want to see more information. not to mention that web browsers aren't very well suited to sifting through/organizing discussion data. IDM-m on a majordomo type system you say? well now i'm starting to get interested... You don't have to read Yahoo Groups on the website, you can choose to have it delivered as email just like any other mailing list. You can even choose single messages or digest mode. Perhaps Yahoo Groups didn't offer this in the past, but when they took over eGroups a couple of months ago, the mailing list functionality came over as well. Yeah... on the surface it seems to have a lot in common with big loada, i.e. trad. dnb breaks & mental programming... but dig deeper and i think it has much more in common with MIRON... for one thing he seems to be controlling allot from his bass - he's said he uses some kind of MIDI pick up for it, either that or just bass through loads of effects, the bass is most evident on Boneville Occident and Plaistow Flex Out... also there are lots of nice small jazzy touches here and there like at the end of Go Plastic, and some of the tracks have a very strong jazz edge to them, like The Exploding Psychology (the nearest to something off MIRON or Budokhan), Plaistow Flex Out and Boneville Occident. Big Loada is probably as equally focused on the synth's as it is on the breaks, and that's one thing that's missing here... the melody remains buried under the breaks for the most part, and the synth sounds are fairly uninteresting... but overall i think they work well due to the complexity of the tracks. anyway... its really excellent, it has as much depth - if not more - then his jazz shit but coming from a more traditional (for him) direction.... it mixes all the good things from his previous work very well.... also nice to see some raga on there.... it's definitely a grower though, so if you don't get it on the first few listens, stick with it.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, if he _is_ controlling any MIDI stuff with his bass it's certainly nothing that you can tell from just listening to the music. It WOULD be interesting to find out if some of the more chaotic, free time moments were done using that approach. But I don't see how that would make it similar to MIRON !? There is a lot of processed bass though, which has been a constant element in his tracks.

Well, from the beginning his tracks have been full of bass and jazzy touches (check out "Smedleys Melody" on FMWT for a really overt example). Those early 12"s on Spymania are very fusiony. Imo, if Go Plastic has similarities to MIRON it's more with those concrete type tracks on that album rather than the fusiony ones. Sorry if there's already been a thread about this, but I just got a chance to listen to an advance release copy of "Go Plastic". Wow. Man is it all over the place. Squarepusher is on top experimental form. Lots of bleeps, buzzs and crashes. I guess the album I would most compare it to is Music Is Rotted One Note, but I'm not sure. It's certainly more spastic than Rotted, but seems to have a similar feel in that it's "experimental". Actually, maybe it's more just "mental". The "My Red Hot Car" track is the most accessible one on the CD (or so my workmates found). There are a couple other tracks that aren't so schizo. One of 'em is a kinda-dark drum n' bass song called "I Wish You Could Talk". It's gotta nice groove. The last song has a slow beat. Which is good as it allows the mind to come down from the crazy heights the previous tracks take you up to. All in all it's one of those albums that sounds better the more you listen to it, I found. What seems random at the first listening takes more shape and form the second time. Some nice melodies are buried within each track, and Tom's masterful control of his equipment is very evident. Has anyone else heard the album? Some other opinions of it would be cool. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've not had a chance to listen to ALL of it yet, but what I have heard is amazing - Sqaurepusher back on top form. It does sound a little more like Big Loada that music is... -i --- Ben Kirkley <ben.kirkley@displaypost.co.uk> wrote:

I'd put it closer to Big Loada. Tom's gone back to using the familiar breaks, but gone even more manic than before... I see where you're coming from though, as it is kind of freeform and all over the place, similar to MIRON. I read it an interview that with big loada he was trying to make real twat shit music (love that expression :) but still retain an element of funk. This leans even more towards that twat shit sound, often getting close to just losing the plot entirely. In a good way though. I haven't heard the entire album yet, only what I could grab off napster, but I'd say the only bad thing about this release is that it doesn't have much in the nice melody area, which is something I've always loved about squarepusher. I've been listening to Go Plastic for a little while too and I'm loving it. I don't quite see where you are coming from in thinking its closest related to MIRON. To me, its sort of like a combination of Big Loada and the better sounds of Selection Sixteen. Basically, this album is fucking OUT OF CONTROL! I mean that in the best way possible too. I totally agree about it sounding better the more you listen to it. I guess most music is like that for me, but the first time I took a listen, I wasn't that into it. My Red Hot Car is a catchy fun song, but I'm way more into the ridiculous drum n bass stuff on this cd. "Bonneville Occident" never fails to knock me on my ass. That breakdown that happens like two and a half minutes into the song RULES THE SCHOOL! Also dig the classic Tom J. melody going on in "The Exploding Psychology". Overall the album rules, but that track "Greenways Trajectory" kinda sucks. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: Ben Kirkley <ben.kirkley@displaypost.co.uk> Date: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 1:08 pm Subject: [idm] Squarepusher - Go Plastic

That's basically what I'd say also. I'd say it's somewhat closer to Selection Sixteen, but more disjunct. The rhythmic programming seems more relaxed to me than on Big Loada. I don't think it's as instantly gratifying as Big Loada. It's really just a continuation of the sequenced stuff he does, so it's got bits which are reminiscent of all those albums.

Yeah, I agree with you about "Greenways Trajectory". It's the longest song on the album, but also my least favourite. I guess it's the song that's gonna take the most getting used to. I like the melody in "The Exploding Psychology" too. Kinda reminds of of the high pitch melodies they use in hip-hop music. I'm going to check out Tom J live on the 5th of June in London. I wonder what his set will be like... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
