Deep thought for the day: If Autechre didn't piss off half the people on
IDM every time they release a record or tour, they'd be shirking their job.
My mate that orders experimental electronic music at the local store
always says that when he plays Kid606 and Autechre in the store, it's the
noise rock kids that say "what the fuck is that?" and buy it on the spot.
They get it, in ways that people who like more conventional electronic and
dance music do not. They make a visceral connection with the sound, rather
than worry about whether it's IDM enough.
People seem to feel betrayed by Autechre, like Rob and Sean owe them
something. They don't. The only thing they owe the world is to continue
to make new sounds that challenge us. The minute they make an album
that everybody likes, they've jumped the shark.
The idea of IDM-listers at an Ae show quivering with indignation that
'their' Autechre isn't satisfying their expectations is purely hilarious
to me. It's Art, dammit, not a life style accesory.
And for the guy who says that Autechre's tour set is just chaotic Nord Mod
patches -- well, Ae has talked about using generative patches. So what?
First of all they're not just pushing play and going off to skin up.
Second of all, just because they use the same paint box as you doesn't make
their art less valid. The fact that you can make a patch that sounds like
Ae means they've set the template, and you can fill it in.
