[idm] REVIEW: Autechre in PDX

I've been reading bad reviews of Autechre shows for what seems like ages, usually with some variation on the theme of "it's just noise, there's no melody". So I went in expecting an abstract, static-y bit of noise. At this point, I'm starting to think that most of the negative reviews are coming from people who didn't like EP7 and Confield (admittedly not their strongest, but the B-side is gorgeous), and long for the melodic melancholia of Amber or Tri Repetae. Because what I got was a surprisingly danceable mess of beats and melodic fragments, with definite funk inside, although B-complex (which is otherwise the venue Portland's been needing for a while-- it'll be nice to see MoM-Vert there shortly) was far too sweaty and packed to allow much moving around. Those few who did carve out dance spaces at the periphery were unfortunately doing little gothic pinkie-dances or post-hippie acid lumbers. Myself, I was up near the front, so I contented myself with (mostly) in-place body-rocking. All in all, a nice, very dense musical experience, with a commendable sound job by the man in the back. I missed most of the openers, intentionally, after suffering through Rob Hall's proto-utopian Depeche-Mode-meets-really-hard-hitting-Yaz approach to rhythm and sound design-- this is the person Sean and Rob chose to tour with them? Grammar school chums, I'm assuming, because I just don't see it. A nicely intense, engaging show on Autechre's end, though. I was pleasantly surprised. M. I was expecting material similar to confield was was very pleased / suprised when they they went for the mechanical malfunction beat structure. All in allthey were tight as hell, and I got a glimpse of all the openers who I was equally impressed with. All I can say about autechre, or the show for that matter, was that it was relentless. Sure it went on and on, but most people stood their ground during the torrent of sound beat the hell out their hearing instead of bailing. But then again I would only recommend these type of shows to those who really started to dig the autechre sound around LP5. I thought Rob Hall was great by the way, but then again if I have to drive 200 miles to see a damn show I'm going to appreciate on some level.

I've seen other people say this and unless they do something radically different for each show, which is very doubtful, I have to say that I don't really get what people are talking about. When I saw them here in Cambridge,MA their set was very much in line with a lot of the tracks on Confield, especially the first half of the album. Hey...I was at this show. Just wonderful. Pretty much agree with your review here. I was the guy with spikey hair and a Gridlock T-shirt 2 rows back from the stage attempting to dance, albiet badly, while getting crushed kinda claustrophobically. Know where I could find an mp3 recording of the show? Ebola np: Xingu Hill

Hah. Cool. I'm not sure how I'd try to catagorize my dancing, but that's not really important. I managed to acquire some space when a couple people left mid-set. I may just have to settle for recording of the New York set that's floating about. Ebola np: silence
