I agreed supremely with your best and worst movie selections, thinking they were missing but a few choices, but to think that saying someone listens to Moby is an insult? bah. Check out the soundtrack for one of the movies I listed as best...Heat. The track "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" is supreme, Moby at his ambient best, the total shiznit. -- forel elitist fuck --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the music to the 3 cronenberg films is wonderful!! (existenz, dead ringers, videodrome). the films themselves are REALLY gorgeous, IMO. i did a screening at my house not too long ago of existenz, and it was interesting to see how folks reacted to it (most seemed to like it, and find the complete analogy to sex and drugs entertaining to say the least, not to mention "a birthday is a special occasion") -- anyway, interesting thing is, after the film, i asked everyone else what they wanted to watch next. i briefly described videodrome, crash, and dead ringers -- and when i mentioned that dead ringers was about twin gynecologists (but very creepy) -- well, all the girls chose to watch it... guess there is that strange attraction? i want the instruments used in the film, i guess they are on display somewhere in canada .. anyone wanna go steal them for me? they get stolen in the film too.. so we could just play a nice little tribute in such a way :) blow i thought was good, but i was not quite expecting a film that was so SAD SAD SAD. paul rubens was pretty fun in it, IMO.. i think he whould star in a film about marc almond though. i know, LOTS of idm content here. let me finish off by saying storms in austin are certainly pretty -- especially when listening to fennesz. I don't want to ruin this part for anybody, but the whole thing is a metaphor for film. For all of you Cronenberg geeks out there, the Canadian edition of the DVD has a director commentary track (which I've still yet to hear). -rob IDM tie- at one of their New York shows, Chicks on Speed claimed that "Warm Leatherette" served as an inspiration for Cronenberg's films- anybody know the story to this? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well..."warm leatherette" was inspired by jg ballard's _crash_, which cronenberg then made into a movie. so, uhh, kinda, but not really. it's an idm tie-in cuz of "warm leatherette", right? i hope so...that's far more idm than chicks on speed. micah stupak /"\ laerm@soulfood.org ascii ribbon campaign \ / international bright young kook against HTML email X / \ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Wasn't Warm Leatherette originally the title of a Grace Jones album? On the movie topic : IMO Crash was one of the very lamest films I've ever endured. Sex and car-wrecks. Uh?? By about halfway through, we were going "isn't it time for another round of fucking in a crashed car?" and sure enough, on cue, there it was. Bo-ring. Warm Leatherette was originally a song released as a 7" by one Daniel Miller - who later went on to produce some fairly legendary early electronic acts, e.g., Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, etc. He's also the man behind Mute. Grace covered Warm Leatherette (and many other things in her career)as do Chicks on Speed. historically, jeff (no "e" on the end of the klein, though) ----------- There is a Grace Jones album called Warm Leatherette, but it contains a cover of the The Normal song of the same name. That explains it. I could barely hear what they were saying, so all misquotes are mine. I always felt that the film of Crash was Cronenberg's weakest post Videodrome film (bar Butterfly) and not just because of the usual film adaptation "problems".

Well, the Chix do benefit from production work courtesy Mego... (whose mix of their B-52s cover was one of the best of the year). And hey, what's more IDM than selling limited edition clothing on your web-site? The Normal's version of "Warm Leatherette" is one of many excellent tracks on the Andy Weatherall _9 o'clock Drop_ mix CD (finally, something good to come out of the 80s revival!). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Shallow Grave?! You mean th the horror/pornflick with the chick who gets raped and takes revenge on her attackers? I didn't know anyone else had ever seen it . . . A friend's dad had it stashed in the back of his sock drawer when we were 13 and we watched it while his parents were away in complete, abject horror. you are of course refering to "I Spit On Your Grave". A classic in the rape revenge genre. Great movie. No soundtrack at all, provides creepy realism to such scenes as "rapist gets castrated in bath and is left to die". Jeff on 5/5/01 3:16 PM, sarah ellenberger at djdesada@hotmail.com wrote:

Oh good, now we can all get back to strutting around like the pretentious fucks we are. And you just KNOW I was so much more enjoying the threads about fucking Confield. I am so tired of deleting 80 messages a day and I am sick of reading everyones inane, banal, and puerile little thoughts. There are a few of you who actually contribute something worthwhile and I thank you for that. But if you automatically think I am talking about YOU, you're probably wrong. And to debase myself to the level of this list, I hated Confield too, I cannot stand Autechre even though I give them chance after chance. Even going to see them live because people hold them in such high regard. I have a girlfriend who loves IDM. Now what other thread can I bring up that refuses to seep away and slowly fucking die? I am unsubscribing now, something I should have done a long time ago. And don't bother to write me to complain about me airing all my complaints on the list. You've read this far, haven't you? Grow up people. Unsubscribe and go outside. Throw a frisbee around. Chat up someone pretty. And to leave you on a positive note, here's something from tigerbeat6.com/cex that I thought maybe you'd all be interested in. enjoy! david. "Here you have 1000 or so people getting messages in their mailbox from the same 50 or 60 people -- the vast, vast majority of whom are easily identifiable as electronic music artists of some caliber or another by the (frequently lengthy and shockingly immodest [oh god, you're one to talk about modesty, rjyan...]) tag-lines at the end of their emails which give their name, email, web site, their label's website and possibly a list of the last sixteen records they put out and where to buy them. And they're all talking about music as if they were just regular people whose own identities weren't completely at stake with every single judgment they make. People are having these arguments and discussions when it's painfully, painfully obvious that no one's really talking about THAT music, they're talking about THEIR music -- even when they don't come out and say they are (which is actually rarer than you'd think.) I used to get upset when heads would bash the IDM-list. Virtually every electronic musician who knows of its existence has horrible things to say about it, especially electronic musicians who have garnered some modicum of success. Now, I have to capitulate: basically, the whole thing is pretty useless unless you plan on being one of the vocal minority who will pretend like their opinions about music don't have everything to do with their own goals and own career. Musicians don't really know anything about music. Fortunately, good musicians don't need to have objective opinions on music, because for us, the regular non-musicianal people, the primary concern is getting these guys to make more good music. Who cares what Artist X thinks about Artist Y's new record. Bad musicians can S[uck] their own D[ick]s and hoot and holler at each other all they want: regular people don't give a damn, and with good reason. It's like -- every music head has an agenda. They relate to other music through their agenda, almost never independently of it. And the majority of people who like music are not music makers. Yet the music makers are dominating most of these conversations. Especially in the electronic music game, but the same thing can be observed to a slightly lesser extent happening with the rock and the hip hop games." (Rjyan Kidwell, 4/30/01)

The movie list was a good start. Here are some more excellent films. As opposed to the ordinary revenge genre? Did I hear someone say Bronson? What was the name of the one where the mob guy came and shot all his watermelons? Now that was a movie. The best movie I ever saw while snorting lines all night was Clint though, I can't remember the name either, damn! It was the one where he had the townspeople paint the whole town red. High Plains Drifter or something? Classic. Great soundtrack too. John

Shit yeah, "High Planes Drifter", what a great movie. I would rate "Fistful Of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More, and "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" as some of the top movies of all time strictly based on the dynamic of film to soundtrack. Morricone's work combined with Sergio Leone's style (ie. all those eye close-ups) was a perfect match. My vote for other best soundtrack/movie combo (ie. not just a great soundtrack, but great soundtrack that compliments movie perfectly) would go to "Andromeda Strain" (great weird electronic soundtrack by Gil Melle, soundtrack is packaged in ultimate spotters pack...hexagon shaped vinyl in multi folding silver package), "Eraserhead", Dario Argento's "Susperia" (who doesn't like Italian prog-sters "Goblin"), and "Planet Of The Apes". There you go, I've now moved the movie topic back to music discussion. For the people talking about Jodoworsky (spelling?), anyone know if his films are on DVD yet? My "Holy Mountain" VHS is pretty warn out from over the years. Jeff on 5/7/01 11:24 AM, John D. at jdalton@mail.net.tw wrote:

Yes, this _is_ a good list. I agree with everything here (except Kwaidan, which I haven't seen). I'm especially happy that you mentioned Tsai Ming-Liang's "The Hole", which might be one of the more profoundly beautiful movies I've seen (the dream-musical sequences, while funny/nostalgic, ended up being more touching than anything, by the end). Vive L'Amour is excellent as well. If anyone out there knows how I can get a hold of either Rebels of the Neon God or The River, also by Ming-Liang, I'd be more than grateful. A few more, mostly classics, that I haven't noticed being mentioned: *Wim Wenders-- Alice in the City; Paris, Texas; Kings of the Road; Wings of Desire, The American Friend *Steven Soderberg-- The Limey *Fritz Lang-- M *Alfred Hitchcock-- North by Northwest *Robert Wiene-- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari *Nick Roeg-- Performance *Mike Hodges-- Get Carter (original version w/ M. Caine) *The Thomas Crown Affair (The Steve McQueen Version) *Wong Kar-Wai-- Fallen Angels, Days of Being Wild *David Byrne-- True Stories *The Brothers Quay collection (shorts) *Jean-Luc Godard-- Vivre Sa Vie, Masculin-Feminin *Luis Bunuel-- The Dinner Party *Fassbinder-- Why does Herr R. Run Amok?, Love is Colder Than Death, The Marriage of Maria Braun *May Spils-- Go For It, Baby (Zur Sache, Schaetzchen), Nicht Fummeln, Liebling *Jean-Pierre Melville- Le Samourai, Les Enfants Terribles *Coens-- Millers Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy *Jan Svankmajer-- Alice *Jules Dassin-- Rififi *Ingmar Bergman-- Persona *Tim Roth- The War Zone (Without a doubt, the most brilliantly traumatic film I've ever seen, if muddled in one or two places.) All right, I need to stop listing things. Best, M. Someone else has probably addressed this, but I think you're thinking of I Spit on Your Grave. Shallow Grave had a bunch of hip English actors in it whose names I can't remember. And since I'm already wasting your time.... (My personal favorites - not 'best' in any sense, except for the first) .... the usual suspects hellraiser texas chainsaw massacre miller's crossing not really a movie but the kingdom (lars von trier - definitely worth a 5 hour sitting) the celebration (talk about DARK humor!) insomnia (excellent soundtrack) KT

Crazy. I'm not suprised that someone who mentioned this would be Canadian, as this is a Canadian movie by a Quebecois director. All I can really say is, if you get the chance, _see_ this movie. I found the plot to be solid sci-fi fun, but the visuals of this movie really do it justice. Not only does it look beautiful, it so delicately balances nature with technology, and has some truly outstanding visuals considering very little of it is 'special effects'ish. Ummm yeah. I would recommend 'A Time For Drunken Horses' also. Although I was expecting too much from it (I read many reviews giving it 5 stars, best movie of the year, etc.), but even with very high expectations I am still quite fond of it. Not your feelgood fare, but an incredibly told story. Other notables: Kenneth Lonergan-You Can Count On Me Christopher Nolan-Memento David Fincher-Fight Club (I didn't like it at all the first time I watched it. It _must_ be seen at least twice. And the Dust Brothers rule.) Oh yeah, and on the IDM-ish tip, regarding documentaries, has anyone seen either Dark Days or Scratch? I've read good reviews of both, and with DJ Shadow doing pro-bono soundtrack work for Dark Days, and Scratch being right up my alley, I'm highly anticipating both. Cheers ps. to the person who mentioned Insomnia, it is going to be remade by Chris Nolan, supposedly with Al Pacino starring. whether this is a good thing or not, I'll leave up to you to decide. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
