For anyone interested in hearing what a Cex show sounds like, point yr browsers to http://www.tigergeat6.com/cex and in his diary he has a 25 minutes mp3 of one of his latests gigs (it may be in the archive by now but just look around, you'll see it). Pretty fucking funny if you ask me, and damned refreshing after seeing one too many "electronic artists" sitting up on stage bathed in the pale glow of their lap-top(s) checking their goddamned email for 45 minutes. david. np: boulderdash, "genderless" PS where the hell did this "iroquouy weak" thing come from then, any clue? Fooled me anyhow . . .

Ugh. I'm kind of sick of hearing all this stuff about people being upset about IDM musicians up on stage being kind of gawky and just sitting there with their laptops. News flash! They're NERDS. Most IDM kids are pretty smart and grew up with lots of computer ability but a lack of social skills. When I played my last show on Saturday night, I had a lot of people (well, about 5-6, the entire crowd) standing over my shoulder looking at what I was doing. I invited this, because I actually DO STUFF on stage, even though it may look to the crowd like I'm just checking my e-mail. Whatever. I know there are some people out there who just sit on stage and do nothing, and these people aren't really being "live." But I am sure there are an equal number of people who sit up there with their laptops looking like they are doing nothing, while they are in fact doing SOMETHING. Don't think that all IDMers are wankers just 'cause they are socially awkward and would rather be with their computers than traipsing around on stage. :) I'd rather hear good music with still musicians (like an orchestra or a folk singer) than see goofy antics with no content any day of the week. If you all say you like the music, why do you need to be entertained otherwise? john http://proxy.enooze.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

skills. you think so? i guess most people who care about music are nerds in some way. either way who cares? some people will like shows, some will be down with just staring at laptop/gear noodling. personally i don't like to "watch" people play laptops because yeah it can be boring. i'd rather be at home doing the same thing myself. but if its interesting enough music i'm willing to sit/stand/dance and listen w/o a "show". - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You know what? When the guy on stage is jacking his laptop, there is something you're supposed to be doing besides staring at the man behind the mouse. It's called dancing. God bless the headbanger kids of Iowa City -- THEY were dancing to Kid606. Cex has a different approach -- he's all about feeling the crowd, interacting verbally, and putting on a show. I love what he does live. He manages to be humorous, crazy, geeky, and genuine at the same time. I think that the clowns who complain the most about what a laptop rocker is doing are the ones who know the least about what it takes to do anything interesting on a laptop for an hour. For me live sets are extremely busy experiences of listening, adjusting levels, tweaking, figuring out why I can't hear what I want. If I do get a minute where I'm not averting disaster, I'll look at the crowd. The performer's job is to provide the jams. The rest is up to you. If you're feeling what performer are doing, let them know. I also get the opposite side of this picture -- hearing performers bitch about the kids who though he was DJing when he was playing live, the fact that no one dances to anything they don't recognize. The sad fact is that this is new music, and the majority of people don't want to hear new music. They want to hear music that's just like the music they already know. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Anyone else get pissed off by these assholes who try to shove dancing down your throat? When I go to see AE this May, I'm not going to bust a move or whatever, I just wanna see what kind of neat tricks they pull off live. Do you people just not want to feel silly dancing by yourself? It shouldn't make you irritable what other people do or do not do at a dance. On Tue, 24 Apr 2001, Kent williams wrote:
