came out to rotation not expecting a big crowd, but the rave crew was in effect. i was waiting for someone to ask "when's the trance come on?" anyways.. got there about 11...first was this weird group.. like the barn storm burners or something. (matt? can you help?) pretty screwed up "live act" didnt really play any music...just acted very oddly. intermission came. pretty fucking entertaining.. the retard, jimmy, came on and spoke for a while. he and kent had some words and finally jimmy did a dance with Kent Williams beatboxing. pretty hilarious...i didnt realize kent could break it down like that. =) next came cex. pretty entertaining. the music that he played was quite nice.. idm/electro/funk. he didn't actually do a live pa, but played it off of some device. instead he mc'd to the whole set. wasn't really expecting this...kidn of expecting someidm.wanker behind a laptop. he got up there and got the crowd going pretty good. did some good freestyle mc'ing and was overall pretty nice. he should play a rave. i dont own any of his work, but will prolly pick it up in the future (spent all my $$ there on a kid606 shirt..so i couldnt dole out more for music =( then kid606 came on... havent seen him live before... started out with sandwiches (detroit grand pubahs)... the rave kiddies started dancing... wooops. drop some kid606 remix on that and bam! *noise*sandwiches* poor rave kiddies. they no like noise. next he played what sounded liek an odd remix of spastik (plastikman)... but who knows? it went into an all out noise/chaos fest from there. my ears hurt for a bit and i could see some rave kiddies cringing in pain motioning for the door. overall, a nice evening out in iowa city.... its great to have good music come out in the cornfields. props to matt&recordcollector, kent williams, and the rotation crew for arranging the gig. -mike --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

For anyone interested in hearing what a Cex show sounds like, point yr browsers to http://www.tigergeat6.com/cex and in his diary he has a 25 minutes mp3 of one of his latests gigs (it may be in the archive by now but just look around, you'll see it). Pretty fucking funny if you ask me, and damned refreshing after seeing one too many "electronic artists" sitting up on stage bathed in the pale glow of their lap-top(s) checking their goddamned email for 45 minutes. david. np: boulderdash, "genderless" PS where the hell did this "iroquouy weak" thing come from then, any clue? Fooled me anyhow . . .

Ugh. I'm kind of sick of hearing all this stuff about people being upset about IDM musicians up on stage being kind of gawky and just sitting there with their laptops. News flash! They're NERDS. Most IDM kids are pretty smart and grew up with lots of computer ability but a lack of social skills. When I played my last show on Saturday night, I had a lot of people (well, about 5-6, the entire crowd) standing over my shoulder looking at what I was doing. I invited this, because I actually DO STUFF on stage, even though it may look to the crowd like I'm just checking my e-mail. Whatever. I know there are some people out there who just sit on stage and do nothing, and these people aren't really being "live." But I am sure there are an equal number of people who sit up there with their laptops looking like they are doing nothing, while they are in fact doing SOMETHING. Don't think that all IDMers are wankers just 'cause they are socially awkward and would rather be with their computers than traipsing around on stage. :) I'd rather hear good music with still musicians (like an orchestra or a folk singer) than see goofy antics with no content any day of the week. If you all say you like the music, why do you need to be entertained otherwise? john http://proxy.enooze.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

skills. you think so? i guess most people who care about music are nerds in some way. either way who cares? some people will like shows, some will be down with just staring at laptop/gear noodling. personally i don't like to "watch" people play laptops because yeah it can be boring. i'd rather be at home doing the same thing myself. but if its interesting enough music i'm willing to sit/stand/dance and listen w/o a "show". - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You know what? When the guy on stage is jacking his laptop, there is something you're supposed to be doing besides staring at the man behind the mouse. It's called dancing. God bless the headbanger kids of Iowa City -- THEY were dancing to Kid606. Cex has a different approach -- he's all about feeling the crowd, interacting verbally, and putting on a show. I love what he does live. He manages to be humorous, crazy, geeky, and genuine at the same time. I think that the clowns who complain the most about what a laptop rocker is doing are the ones who know the least about what it takes to do anything interesting on a laptop for an hour. For me live sets are extremely busy experiences of listening, adjusting levels, tweaking, figuring out why I can't hear what I want. If I do get a minute where I'm not averting disaster, I'll look at the crowd. The performer's job is to provide the jams. The rest is up to you. If you're feeling what performer are doing, let them know. I also get the opposite side of this picture -- hearing performers bitch about the kids who though he was DJing when he was playing live, the fact that no one dances to anything they don't recognize. The sad fact is that this is new music, and the majority of people don't want to hear new music. They want to hear music that's just like the music they already know. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Anyone else get pissed off by these assholes who try to shove dancing down your throat? When I go to see AE this May, I'm not going to bust a move or whatever, I just wanna see what kind of neat tricks they pull off live. Do you people just not want to feel silly dancing by yourself? It shouldn't make you irritable what other people do or do not do at a dance. On Tue, 24 Apr 2001, Kent williams wrote:

Because if I like the music (and why else would I pay x-number of dollars to see some musician if I didn't?), why don't I just sit at home with my headphones on? To interact with the other, like-minded individuals present? Fuck, like you said most are nerds and socially inept. Most people at IDM-type events get noticeably nervous when someone talks to them out of the blue. Maybe I can even include myself in that generalization (althought why would I volunteer to incriminate myself like that?). . . I would welcome any electronic ("laptop") musician who would let others walk around and see exactly what he/she/it is doing on their machine. However, to date I have not yet had the joy. Maybe it is my immature need to see the visual accompanyment to the sound. In attending the symphony you can, at the very least, watch the musicians fingers travel over the instrument, their arms sway over bowed strings. Slight, but somehow quite satisfying. Cex at least runs around and talks to the audience and rips all his clothes off. Pointless argument I suppose, one which will gain no converts in the end. david. np: arovane, icol diston

I don't think its that uncommon for people using laptops to let people see what their doing. I for one don't have a problem with it when I'm playing out and pretty much everyone I've played with has been open to showing me what they're doing on their machine as well. When I played at Umass back in december, they were projecting my screen up for part of the set.
