I just wanted to through my opinion into the mix.... I think Plaid is generally boring, monotonous, repetitive and unoriginal. just my humble opinion...lumping Plaid with Orbital...ouch. That's just not right. And I even dig Orbital. To my ears Plaid is very original. Who else sounds like them? Hearing a track by them, within seconds you can tell it's them. I wish I could say the same thing about armada of Ae type artists out there... Ed and Andy's songwriting ability/musicality blows me away continually. While I make music and think I could mimick Orbital's catchy but simplistic synth lines (of course the success of that remains to be seen, I am NOT saying I am as good as Orbital), the melodic structures, arpeggio type stuff, and choice of synth sounds (which are smart to me because they prove you can use what sound like semi-presets and still tell a great story) inspire me. Plus the whole 'sense of humor' element in there music is much appreciated. hmmm, that's funny, i lump them in the same category as well, ie. electronic artists that actually make *music* as opposed to *bullshit wankery*. that is, they still understand the rudiments of composition and transition, harmony, builds, time signatures, key changes (GASP!), etc. maybe this isn't avant-garde enough for y'all, but it's a helluva lot more appealing to this listener's ears. btw, i find it infinitely amusing when people on this list equate musicality with "production" when referring to plaid. hell yeah they know how to produce a record. but the reason it sounds like it does (ie. good) is because they understand composition, not because it's "overproduced" or whatever. and hey, i'll be the first to admit that orbital's output has fallen somewhat in the past couple years, and that plaid can be pretty uneven at times as well (the second half of RPC). but at their best, both bands continue to impress with their use of new electronic sounds in more traditional song formats. well, traditional in a relative sense of course - it's not like we're talking verse-chorus-verse here. cheers, nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

to me, all plaid sounds the same, and it all sounds like orbital... what they do, is they dick around in the studio till they have a catchy loop going and they sequence that for 32 measures, then they put in some minor variations for another 32 measures and then they go back to the beginning and they call that a song... Both are good for the gimmicky value of wacky sci-fi sound design jack off noises, but it isn't emotional powerful lyrical song material... it is more like demonstration software for the latest new synthesizers and wacky sounds they have come up with.... there isn't a shred of romance in either one... They would both make good movie soundtrack music for like action and sci-fi movies, though.... n:h wrote:

I guess I'd like you to give an example of what you consider emotional powerful lyrical song material...and please don't say Autechre. Track 2 off Restproof is a perfect example of a track that is not only not wacky sci-fi, but is very emotional, powerful and lyrical IMHO...

Yes, in fact. I like it...but you really need to hear it through before you decide what it's "like" because it's all over the map. Poppy, crunchy...then goes quite jazzy. Shotgun effect. At points this sounds much more like a 'band' than a duo; I hear more of an acoustic feel on the first part of the record - but is IS identifiably Plaid. I kept going through this phase, I would switch back and forth. Electronica is cool, electronica sucks, electronica is cool, electronica sucks. It's a phase until you start to establish how you are going to change it, then you get sucked into it. Kind of like religion.
