how come some records will cause the tone arm to go back to its cradle while some others don't? seems a lot of my records don't do this. just wondering. alan! np:roupe:transport solutions(dot) nice to finally hear some of these dot 12"s. i didn't have a turntable when they first came out, so i was pretty excited when they were reissued. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It depends on the turntable, the cut of the record, and how close to the center the record is cut. Most turntables trigger the "auto-return" after it has spun a certain amount towards the center of the record (usually well before the center label). If there's a locked groove before this, it'll just keep spinning in said groove forever. Also, if the spin-out grooves don't extend far enough towards the center of the record, or if the tone arm is aligned a little off, it won't trigger the auto-return. I've only had this situation on records with locked-grooves at the end, though, so you probably have your tone arm misaligned a smidgeon. cheers, /derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now updated daily --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

its not the record its the turntable. most pre 1990's turntables have that feature. Professional ones do not. It is a "stoner" feature. i actually kinda miss that feature. I personally just have my maid flip over the records as she cleans the house. On turntables that do return the tone arm to the home position that is triggered by the tone arm getting pulled into the run-out grooves. On some records the run out grooves don't go far enough toward the middle of the disc to trigger the turntable to return the tone arm. On other records that automatic trigger can be a problem, particularly if they play from the center out and start close in. :) Josh -----Original Message----- From: swamay [mailto:swamay@home.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 8:37 PM To: alan r lucas; intellidansic Subject: Re: [idm] general turntable question its not the record its the turntable. most pre 1990's turntables have that feature. i have a belt driven technics turntable that hat this problem. it wouldn't allow me to play any locked grooves. i opened it up and i've seen that what causes it to return to place is just a little spring.... disengage it and it will play all night :) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . p h o n k . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.phonk.com oo /|\ support / \ mutation BOYCOTT MP3.COM no more http://www.mp3.com/megaphonk bleeps.clicks.pop no more http://www.mp3.com/margaritafilterkings bbeats.piano.slapbass --------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
