It depends on the turntable, the cut of the record, and how close to the center the record is cut. Most turntables trigger the "auto-return" after it has spun a certain amount towards the center of the record (usually well before the center label). If there's a locked groove before this, it'll just keep spinning in said groove forever. Also, if the spin-out grooves don't extend far enough towards the center of the record, or if the tone arm is aligned a little off, it won't trigger the auto-return.
