Nobody forces you to read postings from anyone you don't want to. And most modern mail reading programs (and even some web-based mail services) allow you to sort mail based on sender. So you can let the machine protect your rising blood pressure for you by routing louts into folders where messages are deleted unread. (I use procmail, which unfortunately only works on Unixoid systems, but both Outlook and Netscape allow you to implement mail filters, too.) It's an open list, so offensive and/or puerile posts are inevitable. This isn't to excuse those posts -- we'd be a lot better off if certain folks exercised a bit of self-discipline. But YOU can take action and make the list a lot more pleasant for yourself by filtering out those folks who rub you the wrong way. Saves time, saves stress, and if more folks did this the more intelligent of offenders would tone things down to avoid simply talking to themselves. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you might consider taking some responsibility for your own reactions; it's a law of the schoolyard that bullies prefer to pick on kids who complain ineffectively to those who simply ignore them. -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

No offense, Ed, but I really can't agree with you. The content of some of these threads has gotten so bad, that it the list itself becomes a waste of my time. By the time I apply filters and decide who I want to filter out, I've already put way more time and effort into making the list a better experience for me than it's worth. If these kinds of threads are allowed to flourish unchecked, the list ceases to be the information and artistic haven for IDM that I subscribed for and have come to expect from five years of reading it... Besides... the person I "filter" out today may have something really necessary to add to the list later. Having to resort to filtering people out stifles the atmosphere that this list is supposed to be all about. I would just also ask that the moderator make the list an environment that forces some people who lack... to stay on track. -matT \0 }7o ] /O --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

a few facts: 1- there is no list moderator, there is only an administrator, that's me. 2- yes, i can unsub people, and i do. 3- yes, i can send warnings to people, and i do. 4- yes, people can resub after being booted under the same or different email. this is a public list. the 2000+ people on this list all have varying opinions, mental states, ages, and vocabularies. i really feel that the primary problem with this list at the moment is a serious lack of solid content hitting the list. you'll notice, i think, that the amount of list traffic actually drops when there is a higher percentage of good quality content. so as listmembers, the best thing for you to do to help get this list back on track is to contribute something instead of that dreadful lurk/complain combination, which does get tiring. as far as the moderator "making" the list a better place....on a 2000+ member public list, there's little chance of that happening. i'll keep the list running...you all keep things on topic and civil. thanks Brian Rachielles clickpop@hyperreal.org idm-l admin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've seen threats from someone(was-it-you?i-don't-know) at hyerreal to boot people off before for really poor threads. My agreement with the other requests in asking you do something about these recent threads was based on the belief that you could actually do something about them. Otherwise I wouldn't have even said anything about it. I appreciate the info, though, about what you really can and can't do. I'm sure I share your hope that the list content really does improve... or the people who really contribute well to the list will eventually leave the list to those who don't thanks. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
