For those of you who have had the privilege of actually seeing Autechre live, do they actually "play" live? Do they mix and create right there on stage or is it more of the push the start button and turn on the multi-media show, kinda thing? I'm just curious what seeing them live is like and how much of a live show is really "live" with them? -matT nashville.tn --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've seen them only once (the Reach '95) and they played around 3 or 4 tracks, each about 15-20 minutes long. It was very good and all non-released stuff. Apparently they don't play any released stuff in their sets, but prefer to twiddle as many knobs live as possible. Hear rob and sean explain this in more depth at http://shortaudiojewels.tsx.org/. I think it's the second interview. When I saw them live several years ago, it *seemed* like the entire show was performed live. A lot of the set was made up of dramatically reworked studio tracks that were up in the 150+bpm range (i.e. a lot faster). -- andrij. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The last time I saw them was at the Coachella festival in Southern California. That was about 1 year ago so it was fairly recent. From what I could see they each had a laptop with a mixer between the two and a DAT plugged into the mixer as well. They played stuff off Incunabula as well as ep7 and almost everything in between e.g. second bad vilbel. It was a pretty tight set in my opinion. chris At 05:25 PM 1/25/01 -0500, andrij kopytko wrote:

I saw them back in 1995 (?)as well, and they did play previously released material. At this time their most recent release was Tri Repetae and I clearly remember dancing like a nut to second bad vilbel and eutow. They also played many songs for an hour or so, probably about 10 tracks. I guess their live sets vary wildly, since you saw a very different show in the same year. it's all quite 'live'. They don't have keyboards, but cue samples and stuff from just a few machines. I'm sure this in the idm archives from 1995 or 96. Philip Downey

I saw them live with Dave Kristian in Montreal a couple of years ago. From what I could see, they were using keyboards and drum machines. I didn't recognize any of the tracks they played, I'm quite certain the whole show was improvised. A great sets from all. --- Chris Frey <cfrey@ucla.edu> wrote:

Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of seeing them live. But seeing as many people have noted different experiences, I would imagine that each performance of theirs would truly be different. Just as each of their albums is a complete progression, so must be their live performances. I had the pleasure of seeing Autechre play live at the Coachella festival last year. It was listed as a "DJ" set on the festival hand-out, but this was unlike any DJ set I had ever seen. They played their studio matierial, but it was very tweaked, sometimes almost beyond recognition. First of all, they had an interesting eqipment set-up. There was one Mac laptop and one PC laptop connected to a mixing board of some sort. The board did MIDI control, mixing control, and contained a CD-Drive of some sort. I am assuming that Autechre was using the CD drive to access their sound libaries or something. They were also recording off the board to a DAT. The music was incredible of course. The set spanned their entire catalouge including Bike off of Incunabula and a rap vocal mix of Blifil off of PS2. The best thing about their set was the way that nearly everything was reworked and recontextualized. Even the old matierial was brought up to date, so to speak. It was a workout for the brain to say the least. After their set, I went out onto the grass and just stared at the stars for the rest of the night. Hope that gives you an idea of an Autechre set. I wrote this report long time ago: Date: 23rd April, 1999 Place: big hall of Oesterreich Radio 1, Vienna, Austria Entrance fee: 0 ATS We sat on comfortable leather armchairs. At 22:20 four men came on stage. Fennesz's position was back and right behind his laptop and machine (with machine I mean a box with buttons, I am not an expert so I can't tell what it was). Roedelius set in front in front of biiig black piano with machines and keyboards on his right. Booth and Brown with their laptops and machines were back and on left. Red light illuminated the scene. Roedelius stared solo on biiig black piano. After 5 minutes of 'nice little melody' Booth, Brown and Fennesz started adding noises and, at the beginning of this part, Auteche like rhythms. Piano faded out. Next 70 minutes were ambient heaven and hell. Sometimes a mixture of divine ambient backgrounds and ear friendly noise textures, sometimes hell on earth with speaker, ear and mind hostile noise installations. Event was concluded with Roedelius solo on piano. As far as I know this project was conducted by 65 years old Hans Joachim Roedelius freshen with Autechre's and Christian Fennesz's young blood. What can I say at the end? I booked for this event mainly to see Autechre for second time in my life and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw them in this role. I don't regret 1000km that I made with my car to participate this event. Regards, Robert PS The event was broadcasted and I hope that some Austrian, German or Slovenian IDMer recorded it. If it was so, I would like to have a copy. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
