I had the pleasure of seeing Autechre play live at the
Coachella festival last year. It was listed as a "DJ"
set on the festival hand-out, but this was unlike any
DJ set I had ever seen. They played their studio
matierial, but it was very tweaked, sometimes almost
beyond recognition.
First of all, they had an interesting eqipment set-up.
There was one Mac laptop and one PC laptop connected
to a mixing board of some sort. The board did MIDI
control, mixing control, and contained a CD-Drive of
some sort. I am assuming that Autechre was using the
CD drive to access their sound libaries or something.
They were also recording off the board to a DAT.
The music was incredible of course. The set spanned
their entire catalouge including Bike off of
Incunabula and a rap vocal mix of Blifil off of PS2.
The best thing about their set was the way that nearly
everything was reworked and recontextualized. Even
the old matierial was brought up to date, so to speak.
It was a workout for the brain to say the least.
After their set, I went out onto the grass and just
stared at the stars for the rest of the night.
