In respect to the "Best of 2015" thread, I figured it may be worth bringing the Vaporwave topic to another email. I'm fairly new to this list, so I've been hesitant to ask about Vaporwave, but it seems like something people have thoughts on. Here's a video I found in my own research that seems to do a pretty good job describing the history of (which is actually very interesting). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdpP0mXOlWM But again, it's kind of academic. Anyone here into Vaporwave and can explain a bit of why/what? It seems that people are generally very opinionated on it in the more well-respected music circles. Plus, it seems to have a very devout following, considering the obscurity of it. Seemingly like IDM in its infancy. This is the song that people often reference most closely with the genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU8HrO7XuiE Thoughts? Opinions? Bueller?

Ha! Reposting This, There are different sub genres of Vaporwave. Personally, I've been jamming of this Taspo release all year: http://dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/long-life 18carat affair, Vector Graphics, St Pepsi, and Bloodwave are some of my favorites.. classics IMO The Dream Catalogue has had a good run this year. I interested in seeing where their sub label Nivana Port leads to. I do find this off topic though, unless the genre starts getting more IDM like. Any thoughts on the artist Sandtimer? A lot of vaporware is Daniel Lopatin's fault, IMO, so it's semi on topic. The Chuck Person / Games / Ford&Lopatin material was kind of the first VHS-fetishist cough syrup music to break out. It's not bad, exactly, but it feels very shallow to me. - Eric Sorenson - N45.569, W122.763 - http://twitter.com/ahpook -

Yeah, Vaporwave is kind of weird in the sense that it was born out of an aesthetic and then evolved so much beyond it while keeping the aesthetic evolving. I've seen some really interesting discussion on what Vaporwave becoming so ambient-focused in releases like 2814 means and where we draw the lin on what is and isn't vaporwave. The Vaporwave documentary is great but was unfortunately released before "I'll try living like this", which I and many others consider the best vaporwave release of 2015. If you haven't listened to it, give the track "Somebody Home" a listen. I truly believe that the overstimulation and grooves of that song are going to become a theme of vaporwave at some point soon. I think the vaporwave rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than a lot of people think, but it's a very weird genre to break into. On Tue, Jan 5, 2016 at 5:06 PM, Ben Diamondstein <ben@diamondste.in> wrote:

Vaporwave is hipster kids from the late 90's/ early 00's reminiscing over a time they didn't exist in by ironically & lazily sampling 80's hits and slowing them down so as to they're doing something new and original, when in reality they're just contributing more and more detritus to basically what's an inside joke. I've kept up on it some and still find most of it boring & uninspiring, or as if it has moved into the territory of other already established genres, whilst adding an ironic 80's aesthetic. To me I feel as if I could get the same effect as listening to a vaporwave track by drinking too much cough syrup and passing out while I Can't Go For That by Hall & Oates plays on a loop in the next room over. I do find the song B:/ Infinite Login by Blank Banshee quite tolerable though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYM0kEJM8mU And I enjoy FrankJavCee's breakdown of vaporwave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyt_87yCyNw Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2016 17:32:49 -0800 Subject: Re: What is Vaporwave? I've seen some really interesting discussion on what Vaporwave becoming so ambient-focused in releases like 2814 means and where we draw the lin on what is and isn't vaporwave. The Vaporwave documentary is great but was unfortunately released before "I'll try living like this", which I and many others consider the best vaporwave release of 2015. If you haven't listened to it, give the track "Somebody Home" a listen. I truly believe that the overstimulation and grooves of that song are going to become a theme of vaporwave at some point soon. There's a sort of wiki here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vaporwave/ and some listening suggestions here: https://i.imgur.com/6001VSi.jpg Plus a long article by Adam Harper: http://www.dummymag.com/features/adam-harper-vaporwave It's really easy to make fun of this genre, but personally I think that some of the music is really nice: Blank Banshee, Vektroid, Internet Club etc. I also think that of some early IDM have a (proto)vaporwave-aesthetic. Especially Boards of Canada comes into mind thinking of that. On Wed, Jan 6, 2016 at 8:14 AM, Rjyan Kidwell <cexwell@gmail.com> wrote:

I honestly have only heard very little vaporwave other than Lopatin's output. So here is what I think about Lopatin's output and if you call it all vaporwave then maybe this also what I think vaporwave is. Music is a culture vampire sucking everything in sight and is constantly recycled, broken down and put back together again in different ways. Vaporwave to me seems to be that process, but stripped down to a level where it induces nostalgia because you can notice all those elements that are familiar without too much analysis. It seems like it's taking the piss because really, how can you not take the piss out of what we thought was cool in the decades preceding the one we're in? It is a couple of decades (maybe a few) of our past, chewed up and spat back out at us. Music, culture, space and time; it's all transient with random peaks and troughs and vaporwave explores those peaks and troughs in our western consumerist culture. It cycles through our culture timeline and every now and then it briefly holds up a magnifying glass to random parts exposing our past treasures and in turn our throw away nature. Yeah, the sleeve design was terrific and regarding the audio, i've always had the feeling that this album prefigured the *Rhythm King/Coldcut*-like samples-(over)loaded «house music» that came out soon after and which i instantly got into. It really sounds like some transitional album to me. On Thu, Jan 7, 2016 at 4:03 AM, Ransom Schafer <ransom.schafer@gmail.com> wrote:

100 Hours of Vaporwave http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJuUPaDFJKsvetvZRLxopu_fVI7DiJHxG I think I managed to get midway through the second hour, but may well dip in again, some time soon. Much of it (Vaporwave) is exactly what folk say it is. But sometimes you hit gold. Some producers even manage to sustain the hit for longer than a single track. It's like wading through 80's vintage pop landfill trying to snuff out a sonic truffle. I guess it mostly beats listening to FM radio... Sent from my iPhone

I actually knew nothing of this genre and its subreddit offspring until this thread (though I knew St Pepsi.) I love that a scene can create and self-replicate under the radar using today's technology. I'm listening to 2814 now and it's quite nice ambient background music https://youtu.be/F9L4q-0Pi4E thanks, *Jeffrey J Davis* jeff@jeffreyjdavis.com www.jeffreyjdavis.com 218.833.2847 <http://www.jeffreyjdavis.com> <https://plus.google.com/u/0/+JeffreyJDavis/about> <https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlow/> <http://instagram.com/jeffreyjdavis> <http://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreyjdavis/> <http://www.twitter.com/jeffreyjdavis> <http://www.quora.com/Jeffrey-J-Davis> <https://soundcloud.com/jeffreyjdavis> On Thu, Jan 7, 2016 at 4:34 AM, Brian Power <minusplusequals@gmail.com> wrote:

Washed Hands - I’m Feeling So Great https://soundcloud.com/washedhands/im-feeling-so-great ilkae is 1/2 of Washed Hands (for the IDM tie-in) love that one Also: https://gamera.bandcamp.com/album/eternal-life Definitely one I hit often and probably my favorite album in this corner of the musical spectrum because of the hip-hop influence. Lot of gems for me but Too Late, Water God, Slow down Beat and Eternal Wisdom are standouts. On Tue, Jan 5, 2016 at 5:11 PM, Alec Wild <alecwild6@gmail.com> wrote:

I think describing older Vaporwave as slowed down 80's music is just half of it. The style of future funk which tends to use 80's RnB or Italo Disco samples does indeed conjure a up feeling of being on drugs or nostalgia when listening to it, but for me it introduces to idea of hearing sustained instruments and modulated tones in what would otherwise go unnoticed in a recording because of the requirements of fulfilling a genre at the time. Vaporwave made what sounded familiar seem distant again and in the process broke down the boundaries that limited the sampled source material, at least for me. Granted if you don't like much 80's popular music you probably would not like what some Vaporwave has to offer. A lot of it sounds like shit. At first though, the genre reminded me of some Baldelli cosmic disco mixes tapes I downloaded from Gomma a few years back. Lately, this stuff has taken kind of a cyberpunk ambient turn to it, but its is all over the place. The Taspo album I referred to in my above post has a electro pop trap vibe to it.
