Raymond Scott. There is a new compilation of his early electronic works, called "Manhattan Research Inc." that is very interesting ... lots of old commercials, industrial films, collaborations with jim henson, etc. also his "Soothing Sounds for Baby" series is simply amazing. jsoh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Wed, 17 Jan 2001, Joseph Hyun wrote:

There is a 3 disc compilation on Ellipsis Arts called OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music. It spans ~ 1920 - 1990. I like it a lot. -l on 1/17/01 10:09 AM, Joseph Hyun at jhyun@concreteinc.com wrote:

Todd Dockstader, Morton Subotnic - Silver Apples of the Moon era, Pauline Oliveros, Raymond Scott - they've just released a comp of his commercials and weird experimental stuff from the fifties, Walter Murch - the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet - I think David Kristian released a "cover" version of this on Alien8 a couple years back... Gil Melle - Andromeda Strain Soundtrack, Pierre Henri - Tape collage stuff, but really electronic sounding, like Dockstader, Alvin Lucier - This guy's really strange... Some of his stuff sounds like early Pan Sonic. Edgard Varese, Milton Babbitt - With the RCA Synthesizer Vladimir Ussachevsky - tape manipulation Otto Luening - tape... --- Joseph Hyun <jhyun@concreteinc.com> wrote:

Louis and Bebe Barron actually did this soundtrack. It's awesome, way ahead of its time. You should definitely check out "Hymnen" by Stockhausen... that and "Gesang der Junglinge." When I stumbled across these as a music history student back in '78, they blew me away, completely reshaped my ideas about what music is and what it can be. At the time I was coming out of a highly traditional, "classical" music background, so the concepts were wildly new to me. Although I think of this album as the foundation of my collection, I play it only rarely. In part it's a preservation issue, but it's also because of how personal it is. There are things that you want to remember rather than repeat. But every time I listen to it, it is like making that discovery all over again. I know that's a lot of self indulgent sentimentalism, but hey, it works for me... Besides, if you're going to get sentimental about something, better Stockhausen then Styx... - Bob On Wed, 17 Jan 2001 13:09:29 -0500 Joseph Hyun <jhyun@concreteinc.com> writes:
